I'm usually pretty good at finding info but came up a bit short on this one.
I have a 1976 remington 700 BDL in 30-06 with the original wood stock (no bedding of any kind). I see torque specs ranging from 35 to 65 pounds. For both action screws.
Does any one have info on the exact torque settings for these older 700's they could share.
If i torque down the screw forward of the trigger past 20 the bolt wont open. So i left it at 17 and the rear at 35.
Thanks in advance for any and all input.

What the above post stated...

Plus - 65 pounds (if you can do it) will split the stock or break a screw...

65 inch pounds is still considerably more than you need.

Try making the front screw good and tight, followed up making the rear screw tight. That formula has been working just fine on bolt action rifles for at least 75 years... you certainly don't need to torque to a specific value.

I did some research of my own and it seems Remington advises 35 inch lbs for wood stocks without any type of bedding. From what I can find you won't want to go past 45 inch lbs as it can damage or crack the wood stock. 65 inch lbs is spec for pillar bedded stocks. I currently have mine set to 35 inch lbs on both the front and rear action screws.
