torquing ring screws to much

If you torque the screws down to much does that affect accuracy, will the point of impact changed. Or can it damage a scope.

It can damage the scope for sure.

Most scope ring screws need to be torqued to about 20 inch pounds, each manufacturer has slightly different specs.

Get a proper torque screw driver, in inch-pounds.

Tight is better than loose, but don't get carried away over tightening.
Nxs scopes are pretty heavy duty though I doubt it was overtightening that caused the scope to not hold

I dont let anyone mount or adjust my scopes. I had sent one away for warranty thanks to wholesale sports mounting a scope

If you are serious about firearms, spend $150 on the Wheeler kit that includes the FAT wrench, 1" and 30mm alignment/lapping bars, and other associated bits and pieces to do the job right.
I run about 15 in-lb after lapping and it's more than enough.

...and yet just about every gun owner thinks he can do it... just stick those weaver bases on and tighten those cheapy rings as tight as you can... maybe even add some red Loctite...

Yes over tightening the rings can affect the scopes ability to track correctly, hold point of impact, and can even crush the tube. Depending the brand of rings, 15-20 INCH pounds is all that is needed, and it should be listed on the package or inside. I have a Wheeler Fat wrench, but I find it rather crude, the indicator bar that travels up and down the scale fills the gap about 20-25% between 10-20 inch pound lines so you never really know if you are at 15 or 17 or...? Get a good quality name brand torque screw driver and be done with it.
