Total Round Count, does anybody really?

Total round count, like who counts? Is over 10K rounds a lot? Can I buy a tiny chip and have it implanted into my firearm and it'll tally things up? Is not a good visual inspection after a thorough cleaning enough to determine condition of the bore? A fellow CGN'r thought over 100 rounds was a little high for a 40 year old rifle......he wanted something newer, I had to laugh, round count means ####, anybody can lie about it.:nest:
 
I keep a rough tally. Its easy because i buy lots of ammo infrequently, and know which guns eat what. So when im out i know x gun shot 1000, y gun shot 500ish

100 is not lots, 1000 isnt even lots IMO gun dependent.
 
I could give a pretty close estimate how many rounds I've put through each gun I've owned. I can count my pieces of brass and I keep track of how many times each has been reloaded.
 
Rifle or HG

10K in a handgun is not bad but 10K in a rifle is another matter if the loads are even close to hot. Most ORA shooters will list a barrel life at 3500 before accuracy drops off. You can even stretch that number to 6000 or 7000 if your not loading hot. How much difference will it make in terms of accuracy, probably still enough there for hunting purposes (2 MOA).

HG's can go for thousands of rounds and into the hundreds before something breaks.

My reloading log books list how many rounds were made for each gun. All I have to do is add up the total in the log book and subtract what I have left in the ammo cabinet and I've got a pretty close number for my total down the pipe. I don't buy much factory ammo anyway.
 
Nice to see there are still lots of people out there with brains. 10K in a good pistol no problems. Lots of hot loads in a rifle, might be bad that's a given. My point is round count is all fine and good, however abuse, lack of maintenance, hot loads and the likes all leave their own signs that may help to determine a firearms condition and perceived value. My favourite reply so far was the "when you talk about how many rounds you fired its 10,000 but when its time to sell its 100." had to chuckle.....really

I had a chrome lined C-7 barrel wear out between 12 and 15,000 rounds....the throat erosion was getting pretty bad, and the accuracy dropped off quite badly. (1.5" up to over 4" at 100m).

LOL...what?...this never happens.

Still amazes me how many "50 shots fired" rifles are for sale on the EE.

As long as you multiply the number of shots indicated by at least 10, it should be in the right neighborhood.
 
I'm one of those people that doesn't really believe most things on the internet.:D

One neat thing about living in a smaller town is you get to know most of the gun guys.

I had a #1 in 458 WM that in a period of a year 4 people I personally knew briefly owned it.

I've seen a few examples of a buddy selling a gun to someone in town and then all of a sudden that particular gun is in the EE being advertised as having less than 50 rounds fired or will shoot into an inch "all day long":jerkit:

Weird, when my buddy had it it wouldn't shoot that well and had +500 rounds through it, him being the third owner and all.:rolleyes:


Kind of like 1F brass. Once fired by the currrent owner?
How many times fired before that?
 
I know how many rounds are fired out of each of my guns (except shotguns). As I reload for them all, I keep that information in my logbook, and record how many of x calibre were used in what firearm. A bit anal perhaps ;)
 
I keep track via load and range reports for my centerfire rifles and handcannons. Don't keep track of .22. I consume lots of those. I probably shoot 5-700 rounds from my Brno 2E alone. Not to mention the others that get a regular workout.
