have any of you ever had experience hunting with a blind person? If so, do you have any tips? Other than get help aiming. Lol.

Wow, thats a bit of a tough adventure! But I dont think it is impossible!

I am sure that I have heard of blind people hunting before...now if I remember right there is a place in the U.S.A. that caters to special needs hunters....

I will do a bit of digging, and see what I can find...I am also sure that other members here can help you!

Yeah. *grin* I'm just waiting for the reaction when I go to get my PAL/hunter's safety.

Any info you could find would be appreciated. Thanks.:)

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck. If you want it enough anything is possible. Do you have a hunting buddy, access to guns and a range. I would think that you will have to get in some range time to work on how or what communication would work best with aiming and to build your confidence in your new skill. Not that it sounds like you have any confidence issues in life:)

Have at it girl:)

Now I kinda feel bad for calling myself blind man! I have hunted with a blind friend, but he just sat with me, while I hunted. He was very noisy, and would not sit still! He sure did freak out when the turkey's started to call though! He was a lot of fun to have there! Good luck, and let us know how you make out! Cheers!

Do you have <any> vision at all ? Even without that I don't see why you wouldn't be able to sit in a blind with another guy. Getting you to pull the trigger is another story though.

I do believe i've heard about a system in the U.S. for blind people, as stated above. I seem to recall that it's a buddy deal, i.e. two of you with a special sighting system where your partner stands behind you and tells you when to shoot. It may have been on wild TV.I'll try a google and get back. Best of Luck.

I would think that since you cannot see, that your hearing perception is better than most, which would make you quite helpful if you were in a deer hunting stand with a friend.
I once went canoe camping with a guy who was totally blind, and he carried the canoe on his shoulders through the woods when we had to portage through the mountains and all I can say is I was nothing but impressed with the confidence this guy had.

I know in Quebec we have special draws for doe tags for mobility impaired hunters, but never actually heard of anyone being blind hunting and pulling the trigger. I wish you best of luck in getting the chance to go out and try. If anything, go spend a few days with a friend hunting in a stand with him.

Thanks guys.:) I'd like to pull the trigger at some point, but definitely just being in the blind is fun. And yeah, my husband and I have talked about him being behind me aiming and me doing the actual shooting. It will definitely take practice at the range, though. And yes my husband is very brave. *grin*

I hunted with a PH in South Africa that told me of guiding a blind hunter. They used a periscope type device so the professional could be the eyes, and the blind man the shooter. If memory serves there was a wheel chair involved as well. Ranges of course were very short, but much of this hunting is very close anyway. After the shot the hunter insisted on being left alone with his animal for an hour so he could "see it" with his hands. After a few trips the hunter was up to 35 animals or so. When told about it, I really couldn't see the sense and said as much. It was explained to me that the hunter hadn't always been blind and had dreamed of Africa his whole life just like I had. When an accident took his sight he refused to let his dreams die, and was doing everything that he could to make them happen. That shed a whole new light on it for me, you might say that to a certain extent my eyes were opened.

I work for Safari club International and we have taken visually impaired people hunting in th epast this year we recognized a gentleman at our internationakl convention for his great accomplishments while hunting in his lifetime. Depending on what area you are in I might be able to help.
Best regards

I was at WSS the other day and saw a video camera for a scope. It had a recording device in it, but it also had a cord that directly connected to a TV.

My though is that you could hook this to a scoped rifle and then connect it to a portable DVD player. I believe you get the cross hairs on the video so then your "spotter" could get the proper sight picture and then you could make the shot.

This is just theory, but right now its the only thing I can think of.

PS. Its not as big as you think it might be. The camera looked like any other scope on the shelf so it would be like having two scopes on the rifle.

Please keep us up to date on what you work out.

How do blind people use computers?

Lots of ways braille keyboard and or voice recognition software that can write what you say and read what is on the computer. Pretty cool. My question is how to be sure of shot placement etc. For someone sitting beside a person assisting it would be difficult to know when the shooter is lines up correctly. I am very interested to learn more about the logistics of this!

My lovely wife is blind, 20/200 vison and she won, by a land slide , our servie rifle match on 13th April 08. 169/200! She used her AR flat top with a 6-24 4200 Bushnel mildot scope. She describes to me that she can see the target but not the crosshairs. She simply centres the 18" by 24" target in the centre of the thick crosshairs and shoots!!

I remember seeing a video of a team of bowhunters, one of which was blind. The pair worked from treestands, situating the sighted hunter behind the blind archer. IIRC the hunt was for black bear over bait.
