I took my 9 yr old son James to Phoenix Range on Saturday. We needed to sight in his 243 Stevens (he put a matte Leupold on it) and I needed to sight in my Golden Eagle 300 Win Mag (because James stole my matte Leupold off it)

Anyhow, we get the 243 dialed in great. I start with the 300 Win Mag. Pretty good groups.

"So James, wanna try the 300?" I ask.

"How bad does it kick?" says the scrawny kid with arms like Kermit the Frog.

"A lot more than your 243, but it won't kill ya" I say.

He decides he will shoot it. I get Chris from the range to "take a look at this". Chris comes in the range and James gets ready.

Now word travels fast and pretty soon there are 4 guys also watching. They are taking the CFSC course, but decide to take a break and watch this kid fire a 300.

James shoots a 3 shot group that you can almost cover with a quarter.

I can't duplicate his feat.

Now I feel old and inadequate (well, actually more old and inadequate than when I first started, but that's another story):owned:

I was tempted to use steel wool to wipe the smirk off that kid's face......

So I guess now you lost the 300 too,now he will have a rifle to put the scope on ,good goin'........:D

That is awesome that he was able to hold on and shoot such a nice group. Recoil did not scare him off at all eh? You should give him that rifle to shoot things larger than deer with and get yourself a .375 Ruger. He should stay away from that for a couple of more years.........

I watched a young fellow shoot a 300wm in a 700 bdl th othe day. The recoil was giving him a going over. I watched where he was anchoring the rifle and he was to far out on the shoulder. Getting him to anchor more in the pocket of the shoulder, he noticedrecoil was more managable. is group sizes also changed for the better.

Old age, poor eye sight, physical ills & ######... Wait till your kid takes your 300 mag & leaves you with the 243 & you don't mine!!!:p;)

That's awesome stuff. I've got 2 boys, one is 8 and the other is 5. They'll both be shooting soon. It's like a right of passage in my family. I come from an extremely long line of gun lovin' people.

Thanks for the warning! I've got twin boys that will be stepping up to the 243 this year. I won't let them near my cannon! And we will only be going to the range when it's empty!

I can't wait until they shoot as good or better than me, I will be truly proud!

Hahaha... nice story!

Now just wait until he graduates from RMC and you take him to Phoenix to show him how to shoot IPSC.... and he shoots your lights out and makes you buy the beer!

Ha ha ha, great news, James is moving to the big bores!!! Hey, huntinstuff... Just look at it this way... When James grows up, he'll be bringing you venison when your rocking in your rocking chair...

It sounds like your raising the kid right! Congrats!

Cheers
Jay

I probably won't have teeth to chew with......gumming a steak just doesn't seem right:D

It's a humbling experience getting your ass handed to you by a 9 yr old.....

And tonite my 15 yr old shouldered me (playfully of course) as I walked out of the garage.......and it frickin' still hurts.

Guys, I think I'm dying.............someone bring me a drink. I think Rembo's closest.....maybe Fassteel
