Toughest scope

For eleven years a NF NXS 12-42x56 mounted on 308 HB Varmint. Zero issues. Matter of fact seemingly never loses its zero.

in what universe is a heavy 308 subjecting it's scope to "heavy recoil"?

Man, you can really see the wheat separate from the chaff in a thread like this.

Finn Agaard who was a professional hunter in Africa for years said the only scopes he had never seen fail in the field were Leupold or Weaver fixed powers.

Finn was an extremely experienced hunter and shooter and he knew a lot about the use of rifles, especially on dangerous game. But he's been dead for almost 22 years now and time, sadly, marches on. Listening to his advice about gun handling and power selection is extremely valuable, but anything technical is now outdated.

I have had very good luck with these Zeiss 4x (Jena) on the ZKK proprietary mounts (BRNO)... they arent sealed and contain no nitrogen but have never had a problem with them on two ZKK 601 (375 H&H/8x68s) or a ZKK 600 (270W)

another tough scope I have found is a Zeiss Diavari-C 1.5-4.5 x18

Some manufacturers use an “overbuilt” design philosophy that exceeds expected performance and stress tolerances to mitigate unexpected, unpredictable stresses that would otherwise cause failures. The trade off is size, weight and cost.

Examples include (but are not limited to):

Nightforce ATACR
Zero Compromise ZC527
Tangent Theta Professional series

Is true! But is also true is hard to find credible users today, since guys like Finn Aargaard have passed - who have used the "hell" out of their gear, and are not parroting some "made-in-wherever" sales story. I guess if his second 375 H&H could take 50 Cape Buffalo (last one was taken by his wife Berit, after Finn had died and she had re-married), I suspect that I would want to know pretty exactly what gear that he was using for so long, that kept him alive in those games. I won't get the decades of practice or experience that he had - if ever, I would get one chance. I am old - but would likely go with what worked for him, versus a modern sales guy's story about a "warranty".

Who today would have thunk that he did what he did with old school Weaver rings and a Weaver K2.5 scope? Is all wrong stuff, as per Internet!!!

It happens. First 8mm Rem Mag I had I wanted to get to the range, so I threw on a cheap Bushnell 3-9. That scope was on that rifle for 20 years, never missed a beat. If I recall we bought a case of those scopes for about 29 dollars each, at the time. You just never know. - dan

For long range rifle use I prefer NF. Some here might beseech my choice merely for a 308.
The NF optics were birthed in support of kangaroo hunters in Australia. That means a bumpy offroad journey. At night where road obstacles are usually a complete surprise.
Good enough for me folks.

Steiner for me, probably the only scope that I'm confident can pull double-duty hammering in tent pegs in and taking long shots on game animals. They are pretty amazing, and the binos are just as good.

I picked up a couple pairs of Steiner Binoculars last year.

Nighthunters, which are too big to carry but have some of best lowlight performance I have seen in $1000 USD price range.

The second pair I bought were HX series and again an excellent optic for the money.

For the price point the HX series from Steiner is probably the best binocular money can buy.

There foreever Warranty is also something to consider.

Burris owns Steiner now which gives that company a great future.

IMHO Burris/Steiner is the best kept secret in sporting optics.

Customer service is outstanding as well.

toughest scope is not only handling the recoil of the rifle but all the conditions while transporting the scope and the rifle. quick detach rings can save a lot of issues if they re good. i ve got issues with warne quick detach

so far someone destroyed one of my 1.5-5x20 on a sled transport, an old m8 2.5x20, none of the bushnell 4200 or elite got that trouble. bison or coyote/wolf hunting in winter and sled can be a bad combo ...

In the last 10 years i have checked the zero on my Steyr Scout 308 for hunting.

Each year i dial in the coordonates of my S&B PMll 1X8 to shoot 50 rounds out of my Steyr Scout 376, same notch, easy transfert.
After shooting the 376 , i redial the 308 numbers, shoot a few mags, and i am good for hunting season.

Numbers dont move, this is rock solid and PRECISE. With all this reliability, i may say that S&B scopes are good as your eyes on a full moon last half hour

Apparently I do not put enough stress on my stuff (or me, either), anymore, to know - I think I can understand how most any scope can be made to quit - but you sort of surprised me about the Warne Quick Detach rings - how do yours fail? Do you have something that you would suggest as alternative "quick detach", instead of them?

the warne rings are the one made for the ruger and 2 different sets quit on the same rifle: 375 ruger left hand one with rh rings. you did not see all the little parts inside but there is a lot. warne tech cannot explain it to me, sent back two time different set and parts.

i gave up on them and using alaska llc rings and never i had an issue. lesson learnt for sure: having two scopes ready for the same rifle taken on a river hunt ...

Toughest scopes made by reputation, Nightforce, I’ve never owned so hard to comment to much,

For me the Zeiss conquest V4 4-16x44 scope is as tough a scope as I’ve ever used, excellent glass and low light performance and a tough as nails zero stop MOA dial.
