towing artillery

Ha- have you ever called the gubbermint for advice?? 10 phone calls will result in 11 different answers...

I check the gov of Ontario website and the rules I posted from Manitoba are the same

Ya got a link?....I had a bee-atch of a time finding ANYTHING useful

I wouldn`t tow a 25pdr anywhere on its wheels. They haven`t made that rubber in half-a-century

It has excellent rubber and is stored in doors on stands to prevent flat spots...the distance is fairly short with no highway driving-but it also involves driving through DT St catherines

Its a good job that you are not dealing with the L5 pack howitzer that we used briefly in the early 1970s. These were Italian built (attsa my gun) and could be quickly knocked down for mule/helicopter transport in mountain warfare. The carriages were pretty fragile and the wheel bearings were not suitable for high speed/long distance towing. 3RCHA had them in Shilo and they had to be loaded on deuce-and -a -halfs (portees) for movement because towing would quickly toast the wheel bearings. It was a less than satisfactory arrangement as the gun tower became the gun hauler which displaced any possibility of transporting ammo in the truck. They were soon given up in favor of the rugged old towed 105s, although I believe that they were used in the Airborne battery for some time thereafter.

Yes, there were used by E-Battery Para up until 1989 at least.

There was some reshuffling of army ordnance in the early 1990s too. Seems I vaguely remember E-Battery getting into a more permanent use of the 81mm medium mortar about that time also. Historically an infantry weapon in Canada.

I think you still need lights in ont.

Being equipment, and not a trailer gets you out of license plates and such, but hauling on actual roads, i think lights will be required.

I work on trucks that pull heavy chippers around, noplates or annual safties, but all lights still have to work. Not permanent lights, just string somestuff together and zip tie it on. Id help more but I'm in europe.

You can pick up the magnetic trailer lights at most auto parts places or Canadian Tire , or ask around someone might have some you can borrow . put a sign on the back Keep Back 5000 Meters at all times lol .

And therein lays the problem with this post, turn instead to the law enforcement community or the licensing folks to get a straight answer not some half baked re-enactor practices that they just have not been caught doing yet.

Just like the law enforcement community knows more about the firearms act than the actual people who practice the sport regularly?

So a bunch of reenactors are the "go to" people in regard to the Ontario HTA ??? Hey maybe there are a couple of reenactors that have the solution and answer to Klunks question but I doubt they would be the guy or gal in blue pulling him over either to explain just whats going on towing a cannon around.

X2 on the magnetic light set from Canadian Tire or Princess Auto. The slow moving sign is not enough in any jurisdiction for that type of vehicle, unless it was still owned and operated by Her Maj's Forces. A flag or a battery powered magnetic light on the muzzle is also a good idea. Regardless of the law, the above is common courtesy to other drivers.

I couldn't find the picture anywhere, but there have been occasions of people driving into towed guns. Picture I saw, a pickup speared itself on a 105. Pretty funny imho!

No matter what you do, stupid will find a way.

they don't. ive ran into many officers less versed than i on the HTA.
but if you can say to an officer who pulls you over "officer bob at smallville detachment said this is good", you will most likely not even get a ticket (has worked for me), but even if you do, its GREAT defense in court.

don't you have a trailer plate?
if not, they are only like $10 and are good forever with no sticker needed

if you want, i can haul it for you.
rates apply.

Is the tow vehicle equipped with an outlet for trailer lights? I use a set of magnetic turn signals/brake lights I got from Princess Auto when towing old cars. I bet there is enough steel on a 25pndr to hold magnetic lights.
