TOZ 78 / 99 Scope Mount from Kalinka

That's the better looking of the two TOZ mounts. Beware, however, it has 30mm rings not 1" rings. There is a 1" scope mount but it's not as nice looking. It is a ##### to install. I had to make two wedges out of pine to get the claws wide enough to tap the mount onto the rail. Then I removed the wedges and taaadaa! It's stronger than a weld. :p

My TOZ has had a few unusual modifications. It's not finished yet but I have a Kalinka mount on it (1" version).

Well I didn't so much get the TOZ into a Mosin-Nagant stock as turned a TOZ-78 stock into a Mosin-Nagant stock.

The TOZ-78 comes with a semi-pistol grip, so I cut that off, shaped the butt of the rifle to remove the cheekrest and fit a Mosin-Nagant buttplate. Then, I spliced the front end of an old M1938 stock onto the TOZ-78 stock and carved it down so it was even with it. I used 3/16 dowels as strengthening material. I carved the forward hand-grips. A few coats of dark stain and red shellac and taadaa! I still need band springs and a nose-cap.. still waiting on a parts gun from Collector's Source.
 
Thanks. It has been a fun project. The channel on the nagant stock is big enough to maintain a floating barrel with the mannlicher stock. It's eating your cake and having it too.
 
This is one wicked stock mod. Congratulations!!!

I didn;t find a suitable one, and the one from the US dealer for TOZ looked too flimzy. I e-mailed Kalinka and they told me they had some on the way. Not being a very patient person, I bought about three sets of mounts that "were sure to fit" None did, so I got a one piece base and rings and filed down the clamping side and the base until I got it to stay in place. A lot of work, me being on the move and not having even the basic tools for the job...like a vice. It looks good, but for the money I'd get the Kalinka in a bit and save all the trouble.
 
Pardon the stupid question, but I was looking at one of these rifles with an eye towards buying it, and I could have sworn that it had regular rimfire-style grooves on the receiver. What's the point of this mount instead of tip-off rimfire rings?:confused:

Russian grooves...I think the size is also common on other non-North American rifles. They are smaller than the regular ones so regular rings are just too big.
 
One thing I didn't appreciate abou the TOZ... and about the only thing besides the difficulty os mounting a scope on a 9.5mm rail.... The ejector (solid, stationary) is scraping the heck of my coated cleaning rods. I ruined one cleaning the TOZ. This rifle is best cleaned from the muzzle, like a semi.
Anyone else have this problem?

I scraped a rod as well, only clean from the muzzle on this rifle. As for rings, Hawke Optic sells target rings that fit the TOZ's weird size no problem. I bought mine from a shop in Northern Sask. for about 35 bucks shipped, very beefy and nicely made rings.
