I just got one as a x-mas present for my little brother and it came in a really nice birch stock.....
The one I got myself a few months ago was beech.
I'm just wondering how many of each are out there. I may have to steal his stock before I wrap it up. I'll post some pics of the 2 together soon.

I snapped a pic of the 2, lighting sucks and I will try and get better ones during the day. Beech on top, birch on bottom. Birch is heavier, harder, and stronger than beech but either one is fine on a .22.

Pretty sure mine is beech - I really like the light coloured stock. Nice to get away from boring walnut.
But for the definitive answer, I recall an old story about two trees, one a Birch, one a Beech growing in the forest. They were arguing about the parentage of the young sapling that was growing between them so they called in Mr. Woodpecker, the wood expert, to determine the sapling's heritage.
After some sampling, Mr. Woodpecker opined that "Its not a son of a Beech, and its not a son of a Birch, but its the best piece of Ash I've ever sunk my pecker into." :D

Yay! Just got mine! Here's a pic. The real life color looks more like how it shows on the forearm, just in front of the checkering.

How do you know what type of wood it is? I have a TOZ 99 it is the Semi ver. I have a darker color one than all of you. I bought mine from Armrus.com does that help.

How can I post pictures??

I can't tell either. The photo's being shown often don't render an accurate real life color. Is Birch lighter and beech a kind of Indian red (or chestnut) color? On the pic I posted is mine Birch then?

The TOZ99's seem to be beech with a dark walnut type stain, birch doesn't take stain very well.
K98, your TOZ78 appears to have a beech stock, the birch stocks are almost white they are so light.

The first one is Beech in bad light.....can tell by the grain. The second one is pretty small, but again looks like beech. Look at the 2 in the pic I have on the first page, again though they were taken in poor light..
This would be a stained birch stock on a TOZ99 http://tulatoz.ru/en/toz99.html
Lots of pics of beech stock TOZ78 http://www.sci.fi/~suominen/toz78.htm
More beech http://gallery.bns-code.org/toz

Thanks good to know.

Now here is a question for an expert. After 7000+ and counting rds the screws holding the barel to the stock keep getting loose. I do not want to anything rash. A freind reconded that I dip the screws in hot wax or nail polish and then try tightening. Any thoughts on that?
