Fellow TOZ-78 owners... Here's a question for you.

When you remove the action from the stock, is there something that looks like compressed sawdust on the inside of the stock, around the forward screw hole? I thought this was just leftover crud from when the stock was drilled out, but now I'm not so sure.

I removed the "sawdust", and the barrel then rested on the stock in a few areas. It basically floated beforehand.

I'm wondering if the sawdust, compressed and saturated with varnish, is supposed to act as a (very) primitive type of bedding...

Another question - are your barrels floating, or was mine an accident?

I've shimmed the area where the sawdust was with a small piece of cork/rubber gasket material, and everything is fine now.

Mine is floating, and indeed, it appears to be "crud-floated" on the sawdust and a little chip of wood under there...

I think I'll "rebed" with a bit of gasket too - good idea

I "bedded" mine at both screws, and it didn't work (no float). In addition, it was clear that the action didn't sit level in the stock when I did that, so the gun seems to have been designed to have "crud-floating" only at the front screw. I used 1/16" cork/rubber gasket sheet from a four-pack of assorted gasket sheeting that I picked up at Canadian Tire.

"Crud-floating" - I love that term.

Good thing you mentioned it, as I was thinking of sanding the inside of the forward area of the stock on mine to basically get the barrel to float (seems to me like there's some uniform contact there) but I might just end up getting a thin stainless steel washer around the front screw. Mine also had some sort of orange stuff in there, doesn't look like rust though, more like some kind of dyte to see if/where the action/barrel contacts the stock.

I don't think bedding will do anything to improve a .22lr accuracy.
I see that Armrus has the TOZ-78 on sale again for $100. Get them before they close the doors..........
