Anyone know what size dovetail is on the Toz 78? I just grabbed a Bushnell 4x32 scope last night and the standard rings that come with it are too large for the Toz dovetail. I managed to bubba it together but I want to get the correct rings.

Regards

Brian

11mm or 3/8". You need rimfire rings.

The rimfire rings that came with my rimfire scope don't fit. Should have specified that. If they're supposed to be standard I may have gotten the wrong rings in the scope, or maybe my Toz was made on a Monday.

A visit to the shop I bought the scope at (Carra Outdoors in Burlington) resulted in another set (and style) of rings being tossed to me by the owner "Try these. Bring back the ones that don't work next time you're in. If they both don't work bring the gun in and I'll get it set up for you. No charge." Pretty good service for a $50 scope.

I just mic'd my Toz-78 dovetail, and it measures 0.370 or so, which is close enough. I, too, have encountered rings that were a poor fit and had to be really torqued-down to hold properly. The biggest issue I've had is finding rings that were tall enough for the scope to clear the front and rear sights (mostly the front). I got a set recently from a fellow CGN member, and they work great, but don't ask me what brand they are, because I do not know.

The ones I was given with the Bushnell had to be filed down so they would close enough to hold onto the dovetail. If no one else has a problem to that extent, then I'm leaning towards the rings in the box may have been a weird size. I'll know when I get home and try the other set he tossed me.

I removed my rear sight so I don't have clearance problems with the scope.

Your problem is not unique. I also found that standard 3/8 rimfire ring mounts were slightly too large for the dovetail  . Like yourself, it took some filing and honing to get the side of the mount down to a point where the clamps would hold firmly. I was of the opnion that the so called standard dovetail was actually a proprietary groove for some Euro standard, which was close, but not close enough. In any case, you are not alone with that one and your TOZ is just fine. You will really enjoy it.

The new set of rimfire rings worked beautifully. They're a different style than the previous. I don't know if they may have gotten mixed up at the store, but I'm good now. Scope is nice and solid. Just have to get out to the range and dial it in now.
