TPS Rings

He built my first custom rifle. I care for it like my first born.
My dealings have been good with him as well. I have heard from others that his patience can be short and his tolerance for stupidity is low. He is very knowledgable and is very good at what he does. I seek his opinion on a lot of things.

Just so it doesn't get locked let's keep the thread on topic. Feel free to start a NEW thread about Joe P and his business. I am certain you will not have a shortage of posts there regarding his +ves & -ves.

Regards,

I get mine from Rick at ATRS, but have had to lap all three sets as they were full of burrs. Other than that they seem great.

1 set of mine did get a lapping job done and I was a little surprised at how they turned out. I mean that where you could see the material that had been removed.

Just so you all know, TPS rings have to be lapped before installing your scope. Every pair I've put on guns have needed lapping. Brownells won't tell you that. It's not that big a deal unless you don't have a lapping bar. Nightforce rings, though a little more expensive do not need lapping. I've tried it on many occasions just to see if any material comes off and I never had a single case of having to true them up. TPS, definitely.

Talk to Rick about this.

Just my two cents

Thats funny. I just bought a set of TPS rings from Rick and I asked him specifically if I needed to lap them. I was told that it wasnt required.

Mine certainly didnt have any burs in them.

ATRS has them in stock

This will be my 5th set of TPS rings ( I really do like them) . I have not had to lap any of them thus far. Fit & finish have always been great!

BTW ATRS had them in stock so I got them from Rick...and also did a bit of chatting regarding some custom work so know off goes my MLR to be worked on and cerakoted! Turned out to be an expensive set of rings :D

WoW!! I have them on my target rifle, I better go home and take them off and lap them??? Come to think of it, I have them on 3 target rifles, boy that going to be a lot of lapping. hehehe, sorry guys I couldn't resist when I seen the title of this thread I was wondering how it got to 3 pages. :p

While you guys are laughing, consider this. Any decent set of rings should not need lapping. However, when a person places a rail on a bent action and tightens it down, the rail becomes bent. If you install rings on that bent rail they will need lapping. The proper method for installing a rail on a 700 would be to bed the rail during installation so it can be tightened without bending it. If a good smith knows your rifle has a straight custom action and a good rail, he might say you do not need to lap the rings without further explanation.

While I totally understand the principle behind lapping ( I have done it on other rings) and I admit that TPS rings may not necessailry be the BEST ring out there I have always had good results with them. To date I have installed many sets of them (this will be my 5th set and I recommend them / install them on my friends' rifles too) I have yet to find a set that required lapping.
I am a strong believer that if you need lapping with good brand name rings (ie it is obvious or becomes absolutely necessary) it is more often than not a function of the characteristics of the rifle or mount: not trued etc.

Again I stand by the use of TPS rings and until I encounter an issue with them I have no good reason to switch.
