Tracking down pistols for ATC

Get a few Wolff springs, I think factory is 17lb, so buy a 20, 22, and a 24. Use the heaviest spring for load development (assuming it cycles).

Then once load development is done, pick the spring that throws brass the same distance that the factory spring allows with factory 45 ACP ammo. Pretty scientific haha but it worked for me.

I don't load full 45 Super either, just a 230 XTP with Longshot powder to around 1050 fps. It's not that far behind a factory 240 44 mag out of a 4" revolver but a lot easier to shoot due to lower bore axis and frame flex etc.

Where are you finding these springs? Mine is a Gen 4.

Dude....Where were you a few months ago?...I was searching high and low for some underwood!!

Thank you, gonna order some now to test out!

Edit....Not showing up on the Canadian site??

Yes you have to order that through the US site - charged an extra $25usd. I picked up some .429DE and it was seamless. Can take 8-12 weeks to arrive though.

If you're considering handloads, look into recipe's with Ramshot Enforcer powder & Unique. If you can locate a source for good hardcast bullets like RCBS's 45-230 CM you can for a fact load standard pressure ACP loads at 1000fps that will feed cleanly in a semi. Unique & Enforcer both have been pressure tested and list charges with that bullet which stay below +P in an ordinary 45ACP, and with a 5" or so barrel, will almost certainly shoot 1000fps.

Unless you go to a Rowland or a super like a few guys are suggesting, a 230gr hardcast with Unique or Enforcer will be the highest performance you'll ever get from a regular plain jane ACP. I'd personally choose 230 hardcasts like that @1000 over any factory 357 load in existence if the decision was just based between 45auto or 357. It's better on bones and thick skin than people believe.

Anyway. Good to read of another ATC holder either way.. the more people who make the effort to qualify, the better it is for everyone in the long run. Shows there is very legitimate, practical purpose for our handguns beyond just punching paper like the general consensus has been for Canadian handguns so long. Geographically speaking by itself, Canada is the last place outdoorsmen of any kind should be shackled so heavily away from reasonable wilderness carry anyway.

I believe that Wilderness ATC should be 'must issue' upon demand. Boy would that rile the gun grabbers if Pierre was to bring common sense into the Firearms Act & change it so that CFOs had to issue the permit if you simply asked!

Hey this is great information! I have some blue dot kicking around from when I had a G20 years ago, i had found some loads with it for 45 super i was going to try, But....This sound like a great option.

Also, hard cast is hard to beat. Before my ATC i had been carrying ether a shotgun with hardened breneke slugs or my Marlin 45/70 with 430gn hard cast jet bullets at 1800fps... The options are so heavy on my knees these days, especially when prospecting with a bag full of rocks (Geologist). They are probably more effective than any pistol, but when it gets left with the helicopter pilot or back at camp its pretty useless. The pistol is easy to have with you always!
