Some products are illegal here in Kanerder.
There is a chip called "Log My Dog".
It is a medallion similar to the dog's city licence.
You put it on the dog's collar.
The Garmin e-Trex 10, e-Trex 20 and the e-Trex 30 are
compatible with this chip.
The chip is six or so dollars, not a big investment.
The eT-10 is around $120 and the eT-20 is close to a
couple hundred.
Anyone familiar with this set up?
Only been out shortly and is legal up here.
Curious to how well they will work.
Pup has managed to sneak away a few times.
She hasn't gone far, but there is always next time.
Cheers.
Looky.

I don't know about any of the hi tech stuff but I know a guy that uses a beeper on his dogs. Apparently it can be heard for 3-400 yards in thick cover. I use beagles and a basset hound. We just listen for them. Well the basset don't get far to quick he stays close to me. This chip stuff seems interesting tho

I think the products you mention tell you where your dog was when you recover him, not where he is in real time.

Edit: it's not even that, it appears to be something geocashers use as part of their game

As an aside, his escapes reenforce the need to chip your dog and ensure he has a good quality ID tag on his collar with your cell phone # (it's hard to answer your home phone when out looking for your dog). Also important on the ID tag is "Needs Medication" and "Reward Paid". People who may decide to keep your dog otherwise will think about returning him if they think he's going to cost them money.

It's suppose to be a step up from the geocaching.
I have more of these electronic gps around here than I use.
I was hoping for some insight before I add to the pile.
The pup is chipped, tattooed, collared, licenced, recorded,
family I.D. tag etc.
She jingles pretty good.
I had her out in the bush last season and she was still really young.
Her nose picked up a scent and vamoosh, gone.
I did manage to call her back, but it sure doesn't feel all that great
when one looses sight of them in the bush.
Thinking yotes and all out there.

Are you using a 20-30' lead to train your dog? The objective is to train the dog to remain within a certain distance. A GPS collar won't do that, as you're still going to have to chase the dog if it takes off. A long lead makes them easier to control and allows you to reinforce a specified range. We also used an electronic training collar when our springer was little. Now we can for walks in the woods unleashed without fear of her taking off. It makes the training experience much better for the dog since the owner doesn't get frustrated and doesn't have to yell and the dog knows when it doesn't behave and you can always get their attention. We trained ours to sit on the beep. I tried the collar on myself before putting it on the dog, it basically feels like a pinch or horsefly byte.

Kam--I have an Garmin Astro 330. The collar has a gps in it that communicates with the handheld gps by radio. You know exactly where your dog is in real time.
I only use mine in the states as I think they are illegal in Canada because of the radio signals they use.
This thing has regular radio telemtry beat 6-ways to friday but its pricey. $600 or so--still about half what a decent telemtry system will cost.

force break the dog to come to whistle with E collar...all you need is a long lead and e collar.best to plant the seed at feeding time.
