Trade gun

I agree. The Frizzen looks like maybe a Siler... Is the forestock full wood? Hard to tell from the pics :)

John used to operate York County Gunworks. Last time I visited him was at least 20 years ago. His sign now says Clarke Industries. He had a fine stock carving pantograph. The lock does look like a Northstar. John had dies for a variety of parts, but don't think he had any for trade guns. Curley Gostomski died a while back, but the product line he started is available from NorthstarWest.
120gr. 3F is pretty stout, more than I would use.

I doubt I'd subject that nice trade rifle to more than about 100gr of ffg.

Whoever gave you that other load is probably someone who shoots .45cal in-lines with sabots. Beware the stranger giving black powder advice. More often than not they end up causing you alot of grief, and possibly costing you your nice gun and an eye or two, or maybe more...?

Just my humble opinion, stay away from Lyman and pedersoli as far as the new GPR or trade guns made in Italy.Pure junk!
For a nice Trade Gun,I personally would contact Paul Siebert at Centermark. This is the new company that he bought out and is a part time job for him. He is awesome to deal with ,maybe a little slow,but his guns,just like the ones from old company, are very nice.
Danny Caywood's guns are nice too,but he voids the warranty if you change anything on it. eg: touch hole liners. He's a little persnickety about re-lining his vents.
 
trade guns

I have a trade gun from North star West in Montana it is a 24 ga.as most of the original's were.it is very well made and i had no trouble at the border at all it arrived in about 5 days after it was sent.
 
Karin bought a brand new GPR this summer and it doesn"t hold a candle to the older models.It could be made as nice if you spend 40-50 hours on it.As far as I'm concerned,it's a POS!! Clunky tricker,poor finish,file marked barrel thats blued over.The wood is so black,when I opened the crate,I thought it had a synthetic stock.
Pedersoli has it's funky traits too.Maybe their high end stuff is better but the affordable stuff,....ever drive a Fiat?
