So 8 years ago I got back into hunting and bought myself a Tikka T3 in 270 win. I was very pleased with the gun and it has never let me down. Recently I bought a Savage Axis (I know, I know) for my wife in the off chance she got into hunting. It was a youth model and only available in 243 or 7mm-08. Now my wife is no softy and on the odd chance she would elk and moose hunt the 7mm was the obvious choice. Now after a couple years of hand loading and testing it's starting to piss me off that the wife's rife is matching my 270 in performance and it's using less powder to do it. I realize I'm comparing two different rifles in two different calibres and that is problematic right there. I would think in most cases the 270 should be the better performer, but in the case of hand loading there are so many bullet options it seems like the better choice. And to top it off the 7mm-08 is doing it with a 20" barrel as compared to the 22 1/2" Tikka. I was seriously looking at a T3 in 7mm-08 today. Am I crazy? Has anyone else made the switch?

What loads are you using in the .270? You should be able to get 3000 fps with a 140 gr. bullet. Same bullet weight in 7-08 would be 2800 give or take.

Short action cartridges in long action rifles are icky.

That be true. I'd stick with the 270. It's been doing it right for almost 100yrs now and all other are still trying to catch up with it.

Don't listen to the nay-sayers. You're not gaining anything with the 7-08.

You aren't loading the 270 right if it's dragging behind the 7-08. Bullet selection is more then adequate with bonded, solid, partition in various weights for big game, and now with the 6.8spc you have sub 100gr grenade bullets you can load to stupid velocity.

There is no way the 7-08 will match the 270. As 9.3 mauser said 3000 is doable with the 140s.

Ya. I realize that. It must be the difference in rifle and reloading data. It's just that the bullet selection for 7mm makes it so much easier to find something that works.

100%! the one thing I don't like about the T3 action...

Agreed. I've been looking at different options. I do a fair bit of hunting in the bush. long guns suck in the bush.

Pretty sure he was referring to the fact that T3's use the same action regardless of caliber...short action cals get a blocked mag but use the same action as a long action cal.

oh and leave the 7-08 for the wife. If yer gonna move up from a .270, go to a 7RM :)

Yes I know the action is the same. That's why I'm looking at other options. If I'm going to go to a short cartridge I'm thinking I may go away from the Tikka to get a shorter "Bush" gun. I do love the Tikka though (I think there was a thread about TIkka lovers).

As for the 7RM they are not my cup of tea. I would prefer a 280 Rem

I sold off all my 270s including a pair of collector M-65 Tikkas and realized that I was stuck with about 3000 bullets of assorted weights and brands.
I couldn't justify a 7/08 given that hoard so Bill Leeper put together a 270 / 08 and I can happily burn up those darn 270 slugs after all.

A few years ago, seeing as a 270 was one of the more popular calibres I hadn't had, I decided to correct that and purchased a model 3000 Husqvarna from Why not?. A long story short, I fairly recently donated that rifle to the Ft. Mac cause. I did however , replace that 270 with another that I obtained from Super Cub. ;)Flame thrower #1 I call it :p , A Wby Vanguard S2.

What could be bad about a 6.8x62mm? Good balance between bullet weight and SD, good velocity without undue recoil, good to great accuracy. Flat, hard-hitting and good on the shoulder. I thought mono-metal bullets should only make the cartridge more useful. I thought the long range shooters might adopt it as a good compromise between barrel life and recoil. Not enough match brass or bullets?
