Well on Nov 11th after paying our respects at the local Legion my work mate and I set off about 1.5 hrs north of Edmonton to some crown land that he'd been scouting.
We took a pipeline road that was navigable only by atv. We split up going opposite directions and I found a fresh rub so I parked my quad and followed the trail in. I was only 60-80 yards into the tree line and found two good open areas saturated by deer activity. I put the wind in my favor and found a spot to stand over looking some trails that open to a "Y" in this open area.At 16:44 I hear something crunching thru the thin layer of snow to my lower right but I can't see anything because of some brush. My heart starts to pound and is the sound get closer when all of a sudden this guy walks in front of me at maybe 40 yards. I raise my Lyman .54 cal Great Plains Rifle, give a "Baahh", and send a Lee pure lead cast .535 round ball pushed by 80grs of Goex 3F in his direction where he folds up and drops.
The shot was high so I quickly reload and send another just under his ear and its all over for both of us. I found the round ball or should I say my saws-all found it while cutting him in half (half for me half for my hunting bud). a 225.6gr round ball was 191.5grs when I recovered it. Aside from the Realtree camo I was wearing I carried all my accouterments the same way one did back in the 1820's.
The muzzleloader was a Lyman kit gun with slow 1:60 twist which I purchased in 2009 from a husband/wife shop in Sask and built while on disembarkation leave for TF-309 Afghanistan. Finally after years of attempts it all works out this Remembrance Day 2015.
