Hey all, I’m finally thinking about taking the step from only playing with antique revolvers to getting myself a rifle, in particular I like the percussion rifles, Hawken rifles, Kentucky rifles etc. I have noted there’s a massive range of history, quality and general information to take in, but I’m looking to start with something affordable and general purpose. I shoot a handful of times a year if I’m lucky.

I noticed the DIY kit at Cabelas, the .50 cal Kentucky rifle. I’m a carpenter by trade and I tinker around with gunsmithing a lot, so it appeals to two itches at once.

Are these kits any good? I understand the rifling should be suitable for round ball and conical? Are the caps attainable? And most importantly is there anywhere else in Canada I can pick these kits up that’s reputable? I would rather give a smaller business my money any day of the week but my googling is turning up less than I hoped.

Thanks!

Traditions are what some might consider an entry level muzzleloader. They shoot well and fit and finish isnt too bad. According to their website the .50 call Kentucky has a 1/66" twist which is ideal for round ball. A twist of 1/48" is a compromise for both round ball and maxiballs/conicals. Traditions do have what they call a smackdown sabot, but personally I do not like plastic down my bore.

As far as building the kits you should have not trouble at all. Browning or bluing solutions can be had thru Rusty woods. Follow the directions and your good to go. You can always ask here as there a number of us who have built muzzleloaders.

Another manufacturer of muzzleloaders is Pedersoli in Italy. Pedersoli have exceptional quality and fit and finish for a manufacturer. Like anything produced there is always an exception. They are sold here thru Marstar. Have a look at Pedersoli's website to see what tickles your fancy then browse Marstar's and see what they have that you liked. Pedersoli is step before custom muzzleloader makers.

As mentioned, Pedersoli produces quality muzzle loaders. I have several and all excellent build quality. Well worth your time checking out availability for kits. Pedersoli kit guns come complete and ready to assemble, with only minor finishing.
