Well i finally did it. I bought a Hawkin 50 cal replica from Traditions.
Trouble is I don't know FA about muzzel loaders
Any good sites or pointers for learning the ropes?
Thanks in advance

New rifles barrel bore needs to be really cleaned, mineral spirits and the like scrub -ALL- the storage preservative out of it..

With a nice -DRY- clean bore "unloaded" bust a couple caps.

load her with the same amount of powder as the cal "for starters"

45 cal--fffg 45 grains
50 cal--fffg 50 grains--------these are start loads---------;)
62 cal--ffg 65 grains

Top that powder with a undersized ball and a thick patch "later on you will find the rifles sweet load"

Always make sure the ball is seated on the powder with no air gaps between powder and ball.

Cap the now loaded rifle

Aim

Fire.

Thinking about it, it may even be a good idea to practice loading and firing with a wad of paper over the powder in place of the ball....

Just until you discover the depth of the Patton breech and all the other incidentals. "traditions rifles I believe have the patton breech"

It sure is easier to pull a wad of paper then a ball.....

Things I have learned the hard way.;)

Good straightforward advice.....+1

But you do need a good bullet puller...It happens to the best of us.....Just make sure you use a bullet puller that matches the caliber ie: don`t use a .45 bullet puller on a .58 cal....For patched bullets, try and get the kind that uses compressed air through the nipple to pop the bullet out....Works like a dream...Doesn`t work on mini balls though....
