trail boss loads

i went to our range today, with 45-70 and 458 lott. 10 gr. trail boss with 300 gr. r.c.b.s. cast loads. in the 45-70. with one hole groups at 50 yards. more testing at 100 yards soon. 19 gr. trail boss, 405 saeco cast in the 458 lott, same thing again. this is fun as well as inexpensive. i thought i was shooting a 22 magnum. i will be buying more trail boss i see.

I agree. Trailboss can turn a tiger into a pussy-cat. You can shoot a heavy rifle all day without getting a black and blue shoulder. The recommended method of determining an appropriate load for Trailboss ONLY is to fill a case to the bottom of the shoulder, then weigh that load. Deduct 10% and that gives you the starting load. 10 grains in a Lott seems light to me.

Compared to a full house 45/70 my 12 grains of IMR 700X is sweet to shoot as well. I should pick up some trail boss. I use reduced loads in my 303, 30-30 and 45/70. Take a fridge cardboard and set it out to 500 yards and if you have a site picture of trees above its amazing how often you can smoke that, out that far. I started using a 1/4 section of a 1/8" thick grain bin bottom (christmas tree shape 8'h X 8'w)and you could hear the hits after you ejected the shell. My aim point was 44 feet above the target.
