Any other guys here using trail boss powder?

I am new to handguns and reloading.
But it would seem an ideal beginners target powder for 38 special, 45 colt, 45 70
and others too.

Any experences to share...

I've experimented with Trail Boss alot, but have no exp. with the .38, I have used it with good success in the .44/40, .45 Colt, 32/40, 38/55, and 45/70. In the .44/40 and the .45 Colt it is excellent and would make a great Cowboy action load. I am using 5.5 grs in the .45 Colt with 255gr. cast bullets from MT Chambers and have had great results. Trail Boss is bulkier than any other powder I have tried and 5.5 grs. fills the case more than other powders, so is not position sensitive and no fillers are used in any of these cases including the rifle carts. In the rifle carts. you use comparatively less powder and it does a great job of filling the case, however, pressure goes up quickly, before high vels. are reached. In my .32/40 using fixed ammo I could only reach 1100fps. before reaching my self imposed pressure limit for the circa. 1901 Win. 1885. This is a good powder if you want light loads(without ignition problems) and also save some money on powder due to light charges. Pls. note that I did not try to breech seat at all with this powder.

Hi Guy's
Has has any body tried Trail Boss in 577/450 Martini Henry with 350 to 400 Grn bullet.
Cheers Gerry

I've just picked some up to try in the 45-70. An old friend who's heavy into BP suggested a max load of 18.0 grains of Trail Boss in the 45-70 behind a 405gr lead bullet. This should generate ~1,200 fps while (apparently) filling the case completely.

The combination is supposed to be accurate...

Hi
I am using .22 grns of Herco with wading to fill the case.I saw on another forum .27 grns of Trail Boss fills the case to the neck 577/450 mutch gigger than 45-40 Trail Boss is the way to go no filler. 27 is lot nore than 18 in 45-70. Trying to find someone who uses TB in 577/450.
Cheers

Those may be uncharted waters.....I would try it in my 45/100 or 50/90 Sharps but I am worried about pressure and besides they are so accurate with Black Powder I see no reason to experiment there. I read somewhere that Trail Boss is not recommended for cases that have shoulders, although it worked fine in my 44/40.
