Trail boss

I have gotten down to about 800fps in a 30-30 with no problems. Didn't want to go any lower, just in case the bullet decided to not leave the barrel on one of the shots. I think that would be the limiting factor for using TB. I didn't have any big spreads or unburned powder problems and these were really slow. You could hear them travel to the target.

I've gone down to 700fps with 44 mag rifle loads and .433" round balls. Could watch the ball travel to the target through the scope; was really weird to see it at 50yds.
I'd stick to 800-1000fps. Depending on your altitude and the air temperature the speed of sound can be as high as ~1126fps (or higher on a really hot day at sea level).

1300 in a 30-06 with a 150 gr FMJ. Going to try some 220 gr cast this summer. Didn't go lower than 1300 because I was getting alot of empty space in the case.

I find that the slower you want to go, the faster the powder you should use. I go no slower than about 700 fps with Trail Boss and Unique, and use Red Dot and Bullseye if I want reliable loads slower than 500 fps. Even then, I use only cast bullets, and ensure that every bullet exits the muzzle before the next shot.

I have used a lot of Trail Boss in very light 45 colt loads and found that even in that comparativlly short case compared to the one you want to use, it is very "position sensitive". If shooting down hill and the powder migrates to the front of the case you will get more un-burnt "confetti" powder than "bang". Shooting level or up hill I love the stuff but won't use it on any down-shooting stages.

Just for curiosity sake, what do you shoot at under 500fps? Thats red ryder territory.

If one wanted to shoot Bullseye (as I have some for 38 special) what "target" bullet would be best and easily availabe for a STI 1911 45ACP asuming speeds in 800-900 fps would be best for accuracy.

I got bored a couple summer's ago and loaded down with Trail Boss in my 45-70. When I got to 2 grain's the first boolit barely hit the 5 gallon pail 25 yds away. The second stopped right at the muzzle, I had to pull it out.
I still have them, and a great impression of the rifling on the paper patch's.

Paper!

I looked at my notes and for example in the 38 S&W (a tiny handgun cartridge), I tried 1.7 grs of Trail Boss (a full case) or 1.7 grs of Clays shoot a 145 gr cast bullet just under 500 fps.

In the 303 Brit, 5.0 grs of Red Dot sends a 250 gr cast bullet out at just under 500 fps as well.
