Just out of my own morbid curiosity,, has any one tried trail boss in a 44 "cap and ball" ? Did a search and found people using it in black powder cartridge revolvers. Just wondering if it would be a usable substitute to black powder? Any in put would be appreciated.

Someone was using it in a .44 mag muzzle loader? That can be quite dangerous even though it is a "black powder like smokeless". As far as I know Trail Boss doesn't like being compressed which black powder loves so loading techniques may require a bit of tweaking. It's also going to have a different pressure curve even if it does have a similar max pressure. I have heard of it being used to get black powder like velocities out of old black powder cartridges but not in a muzzle loader.

Using any smokeless in a muzzle loader designed for black powder can be touch and go. There are a few smokeless muzzle loaders available and at least a couple companies that make replacement barrels for common black powder rifles that are designed for smokeless but using Trail Boss in a muzzle loader seems like it could go bad without a lot of caution and experience. It's definitely something that seems interesting to me but I wouldn't want to do that without a lot more research and experience with black powder.

Did some searching and apparently Trail Boss causes uncontrollable pressure spikes when compressed. To properly seat a bullet in a muzzle loader you need to compress. This to me sounds like a pipe bomb.

Several US forums say it produces about 1-1/3 the pressure of black powder in handgun cartridges. Apparently it is quite popular among cowboy action shooters in the states using antique guns designed for black powder. Several sites warn not to use a drop tube like you would for black powder because it can compress it more than it likes to be. It sounds like something interesting to try for sure (and a lot less cleaning than black powder) but I don't have any antique guns to test it in
