Trail Cam Pic - Need help - What is this?

I'd say you're looking at a cow red stag. Lots of them mysteriously escaped(set free?) years ago east of North Bay from a couple farms when game farm hunting was no longer allowed and having to pay to feed them became extremely costly and the sales market for the meat was almost nil.....I shot at one in a herd of 12 one day back in the winter of "09 but sadly missed it. A buddy of mine has taken over a dozen in the area over the years and we have seen them as far as 40+ miles from the original property they were raised on. I'd bet they have expanded over the years. I know from friends still residing in the area they are still thriving over 20 years later...the colours in your pictures are reminiscent of Red Stag not Elk....we have wild and farm raised Elk in the area I reside in now and the neck colouration and rump patch is different....Elk have a rump patch that resembles closer a mule deer.....

Elk can wander a surprising distance. They were released on the Suffield ranges in early '97 and within a year some had been found from Prince Albert to Sundre, Alberta area and either Colorado or Wyoming. They were transplanted from Elk Island and had ear tags.

Ok, I need help .... what is this? Is this an elk?

I have owned this property for 13 years ... and my trail cameras are up for the last 5 years now ... all year round. And never have I seen an elk out there ..... or heard one ... or caught one on camera ...

So, I am a bit puzzled .... ??

Is anybody aware of elk east of Ottawa in Ontario?

Another pic of the same animal

Food! :)

Are there rules out there that say if it officially doesn't exist, you still can't shoot it?

Money is on a farm escapee. YMMV.

But I'd bet the local butcher buys the "I got it from a farm!" story!
