Just wondering what you guys recommend for a decent trail cam? Been looking at some at Cabelas and Bass Pro, but looking for first hand opinions and suggestions.

I have a couple SpyPoint IR6 cams, they have the red led panel... Work great even in winter. Just use Energizer Lithium batteries...

Also recently picked up a couple SpyPoint IR8 cams, with the black led panel for $89 each... Have not had a chance to put them out & evaluate them... I imagine they are the same as the IR6...

SpyPoint or Moultrie.

Stay away from cheaper Wildgame innovations and such. Battery hogs, poor range, and fail too often. I only have one left of all the cams I have owned, a Moultrie. I'll buy spypoint next time I buy one.
 
Using spypoint mini live cell cameras. Mixed success, mainly due to user error and learning how to set them up and operate correctly. However, when the stars align and I have cell service where I put them, it takes great pictures, and I'll get them minutes later. Setup with external battery and solar panel, 3 hour drive from me, will stay out year round. Photo's uploaded to a server to be viewed online, and I get texts whenever it takes a new one. Saves a lot of travel time if you get them in the right spot.

What's the details on the cell cameras? They use data I assume? Through your cellphone or do you get a plan for the camera? I've been interested in them but haven't been ablet o get time to research them.

got a Covert Code Black, easy to use after its configures.

send a pic or video via cellular network.

Bell has a pay as you go, $15 month, unlimited txt's and videos.

They aren't complicated to use, no different than any other camera, but the online system adds a bit of complexity, however it's user friendly and fairly idiot proof. Cameras use a SIM card, I use a Telus prepaid card, $10/month to keep it charged with data, but will likely switch to bell next year for better coverage.
 
Bell doesn't have JUST a txting plan, they require have minimal minutes that expire monthly. When the plan expires and you don't top it off, I was told you need a new SIM card
 
This is a few year old Bushnell. It's ok for a midline unit, but I'm sure there's better

i too am looking at a cell trail cam. I currently have a cabelas one... it works really well, takes nice pics... but what a pain to go and get the data.

For you guys using the cell cameras, which is best?

What a pain?.... I love doing this.... And I love strapping the snowshoes on and getting it even post season..... Between that and coyote hunting, And snaring rabbits, I have managed to stave off cabin fever for the most part......
 
But the area that I hunt is 2 hours from home. Young kids and a nagging wife really change the calculus!!

I agree. I'd love to strap on the snow shoes and go. I can think of few things more enjoyable!!!
