Hi folks,
I would like like to get a trail camera or two to put around my 100 acre bush, just to get pictures of what is out there. We have plenty of deer and coyotes and the occassional black bear. I just want to confirm the tracks I have found.
It seems like prices vary a lot, I do not want to buy more than I need but I dont want to buy something that won't do the job.
What are your experiences with the different makes and models and what would you recommend?

Thanks, Gunstock

I just picked up a bushnell trail sentry...Set it up today..wait a few weeks then head back in to see what we may have captured..(High pop.. moose area with very large bulls)...So hoping to get a few good shots.

I'm also looking to buy my first trail camera. Been researching a lot. If I decide to go on the cheap, I'm likely going to get a Moultrie D40. The seem to be going for around $80 on ebay, while Cabelas Canada has them for $130.

I like the idea of a good IR cam, but the price for a good one seems to be too high for me right now. Cheaper IR models (Stealth Cam i540IR) seem to leave a lot to be desired, like 5-second shutter times :(

Let me know how you make out.

I forgot to mention I use a Moultrie I40. Takes excellent pic's, and the battery life is awesome. I have taken over nine hundred pics on the same batteries. IR does cost more, but it uses much less battery power than a unit with a flash.

Here is an example. This one is not as clear as most pics due to the sun glare.

I've heard that response speed is important. I'm looking for a trail camera as well. Apparently some are so slow that they don't catch animals walking by, and it gets worse as the electronics get colder.

I've read a lot of good reviews on the Moultrie D40, from the writings response time is 1 second which is supposed to be good. Anyway just got me one today new for $99.99, on sale from $129.99. From what I read the D40 is a very good camera for the price, good or bad deal I bought it and will set it up and find out for myself, calling for rain all weekend but all I need is no rain for an hour so I can jump on the ATV and go set it up.

Gotta go put more corn anyway, these guy's are eating about 30 pounds a week (could probably take more to) and they also went through 45 pounds of apples in a week. I know it isnt bears because my feeder is still intact.... and I found some apple skins on the ground........and no bear droppings...
If the cam is still there in two weeks from now I'll see what comes out.

the d40 is a very good camera for the price. Only cons about it is, it doesnt like anything colder then zero degrees, mine also takes a few pictures without the flash going off at night, kind of a piss off.....

What Da.....! D40 is a seasonal trail camera? After reading this thread, I was going to get one.

I have the Bushnell Trail Sentry 5.0 camera, and I hate it. It'll take about 2000 pics before the batteries die. Only thing is, those pics are taking about 1-4 minutes apart from the minute I turn it on. Every time I check it, the batteries are dead, and I have a few thousand pictures of nothing. I've tried adjusting the sensitivity settings, but no go..

Good luck w/ your choice.
