Trail Mix for Bears

Yeah, I think molasses, corn, bags of old doughnuts, apples ect, are the more common choices. Trail mix is pretty expensive, isn't it?

Why the thoughts on trailmix? It should work really well, but it's the cost that might stop ya.

I have popcorn, outdated bread, bags of old Timmy's doughnuts, fryer grease. Was just curious about trail mix, if it is too much I'll just go with what I have plus I'll try the molasses and corn mix. Was just a feeler seeing if I could get it cheap, thanks again and good luck everyone.

Bulk Barn pricing is ludicrous for what you get. And they typically don't have enough at any one location for a proper bear bait anyway. Eg. Popcorn kernels were $3/kg while Walmart sells 1kg bags for $1.57.

You can't beat popcorn for overall impact (bears love it), manageability (it's easy to carry in), and cost (it's really cheap). It takes an investment in time however I found a fast way to get it popped. A small induction cooktop with a cheap steel pot will get you about 4L of popcorn done in 2 min. You can fill a 55gal drum while cleaning the garage. You can use discarded restaurant fryer grease to pop it for added flavour and it's free.

If you can carry lots of weight and don't have the time to pop popcorn, the local feed store is your next best bet. Molasses-covered corn, deer feed mix, etc. are all good options. I have had good results with all of the above in recent years.
