Just getting into the 223/ AR15 game and wondering if anyone as used trailboss in an AR15 and if it cycled the action. i've seen loads but assume its for bolt guns.

yes indeed, just waiting for the transfer to finish. i'll also be casting for it once i get some molds.

if it works decently enough i should get a good amount of reloads from a can vs other powders.

my guess would be short stroking due to low gas/duration. But give it a try, just watch out for fast powders in bottle neck cartridges and pressure spikes.

Do you have stash of Trail Boss? I can't find any localy.

ya i stocked up at the start of the shortage, forget how much i have but it seems most rifle powders are back in stock so i'll likely use them most of the time. just picked up a pound of cfe223 to try. i mainly use the trailboss for my 500mag and 38spl/357mag.

I'll post results when i get the gun.

Loaded up 20 rounds with 5gr based on the video below. It won't cycle the action but fires at least Haha.

I load the Ideal 225438 gas checked and tumble lubed with Ben's Liquid Lube over 5 gr of TB and it's just barely supersonic. Very accurate out of my Axis at 100yds and quieter than hi-velocity 22LR but it doesn't even budge the action on my T97. Makes it real easy to find my brass, anyway! It's a pretty economical load but since Trail Boss is so bulky and the cans are way less than 1lb, I think other pistol or shotgun powders might work out to be cheaper.

I've been using clays with cast bullets for low velocity fun plinking rounds in my Norc M4gery. Super fun and turns heads at the range but yeah pretty well a cool looking bolt gun with that ammo. Figure with an adjustable gas block it may be possible to get the action to cycle. So for now have found a use for my cast 225 bullets till I get around to getting some gas checks.

I got a chance to fire the trailboss loads off and they all worked. Felt like a slightly stronger 22lr. I had to cycle the action and accuracy was alright. I'm going to make some more with more powder up to 10gr.

How was the fouling in the action, I've used a considerable amount of TB and found it to be very "position sensitive". If the powder is not back against the flash hole, a very inconsistent burn will result leaving behind a large amount of fouling from those big flakes. All of my experience was with the .45 LC and 45-70 cases so am curious what the fouling was like from the smaller case.

Didn't really look. Next time I go I'll shoot them first with a clean gun and let you know. I haven't really noticed it being dirty in my 500 or 357mag but the case is usually pretty full.

So i loaded up 20 rounds with 6.6gr of trailboss under a 55gr soft point (despite what i wrote on the pap for the range today. after 20 rounds i didn't notice any build up of carbon or soot but it was only 20 rounds. i didn't attempt to tip the gun to try and get the powder to the front or back of the case so not sure how that affected things.

Accuracy was decent, at least for me. they were shot at 25m so doesn't really say a whole lot for long range.
