didn't feel like buying shims for the gas system, so instead I cut up a pepsi can and it seems to be working quite well.

anyone else do this?

Haha - i did the EXACT same thing.

However, it's not as good as real shims, as it compresses more, and the first time you disassemble, it will rip apart.

Spend the $10 - worth it!

"...real shims..." Pop can Al isn't great for shims. Too soft. Mind you, a real shim can be had in most hardware stores. Most of them sell sheets of brass for not a whole lot of money.

Ever hear of the 80 - 20 rule?
80 percent of the results come at 20 % of the effort,
and that last 20 % costs you 80 %.

IMHO,
shims are a complicated solution to a non-existent problem. Shimming the gas assembly is about 1 % of what makes an M-14 accurate. And you can achieve the same results with a machinest spring loaded center punch, and a few minutes of judicious staking in the correct locations.

A good USGI fiberglass stock, a GI bolt properly fitted, and a decent trigger job will improve your M-14 rifle's practical accuracy about as far as most people ever need to go. After that, the point of diminishing returns has been reached ...

The official internet term for this kind of low effort/ good reward 'smith work is WECSOG: Wile E. Coyote School Of Gunsmithing. I remember this term coming about on the FALFiles.com about 10 years ago when there was a lot of activity building FAL rifles from demilled kits.
