training for competition

As I gear up for PRS type shooting, my trio of rifles will include a Savage rimfire (93FV) and all will wear Boyd pro varmint stocks. This gives me the same stock feel and I can ballast as needed to keep things constant. Obviously, the rimfire bolt throws are drastically shorter and thus faster but at least the ergonomics are as similar as I can make it.

With the Lam stocks, I have the freedom to machine and add "stuff" that might help the cause. And when things get dinged up, a bit of time with some sandpaper, filler and paint and back as new.

All will wear the same rail so moving optics around should be simplified.

My intermediate trainer will likely be in 223 rem. But my actions all are barrel nut style so barrel swaps are easy. Although I have a 6XC and a barrel ordered for 6.5 Creedmoor, I am really leaning towards this new tactical class. Heaven knows I am geared up for both 223 and 308 so this might just be the best way forward.

Keep an eye on how this class develops.

A personal update... started relearning how to do positional and barricade shooting. I have decided to jump right to the Savage 223 trainer. The rimfire is fantastic but the feel and function is different. Also, no recoil, lighter and overall just a different feel.

the centerfire rifles I have (Savage and Rem 783) share similar bolt function, mags, stocks, trigger pull, weight, optics and positional supports. Except for the cartridge, they are near identical so I am training as I will compete.

For SR, I am using a Hrn 55gr FMJ sent from a 223 over ball powder. Dirt cheap for a centerfire and with a factory take off, decent accuracy. Certainly enough while I figure out the broad strokes of moving around.

For LR practise, I will go to a Shilen 8 twist 223 and launch 77 to 80gr bullets. With scaled distances, I should "see" the same ballistics as my 6.5 match rifle. For more direct practise and higher recoil, a Rem 783 in 243 will be put into use. Then some time with the Rem 783 in 6.5 creedmoor to round out the ballistics training.

So far... so good.

I see people mention ballast. I have a Savage MkII in a Boyds Tacticool. It's a wood stock. Is there anything I can do to make it heavier so it's more like my main rifle that won't be permanent?

Yoga, baby.... Muscle recovery, mobility exercises to go along with strength training....

And for pressure point / muscle knots relief: Lacrosse balls, a Canadian solution!

And now for the weapons of mass destruction.... the Softball for extra tough pressure points....

Your next level ? Yoga class! All great fun!!

Cheers, :dancingbanana:

I went onto the 6.5 guys site and found some information to build your own practice barricade. It was pretty crude so I redid it in EXCELL. Still not draftsman quality but better if you where looking to build one. I hope this works out and someone gets some use of it.

Thank you for this!!! Off to Home Hardware I go!!

Go wild APS! Just happy it is being used. REMEMBER as noted on the drawing... "NOT TO SCALE".
I did what I could from the original.
Middle right, PVC pipe was noted suspended by springs. No information on what springs or method of attachment.
As such, I chose to make no notations.
Should you find things that need to be adjusted or updated, let me know.
I will fix and re-post for others.
It would be nice if you let us know how you make out.
Good luck!
