Does anybody have any experiance with training a hunting dog?
The wife and I are hopefully adopting a bull mastiff X Labrador, and I was considering training it to respond to gun shots, flush birds, and possibly tree bears.

Advice?....other then get a different dog

Cheers

I personally would not waste my time on training a dog that was not from proven hunting blood lines. It just takes way too much investment even with a dog that had good genetics. That's just me though. Some mongrels can be good hunters, but it is definitely not predictable. Good luck!

I agree with Longwalker. But if you are set on that dog, get the obedience down and just take him with you. Don't expect much but enjoy his company. He may surprise you one day.

in a nut shell...

What you put in is what you get out. If you want to train a dog for hunting. It is no longer is a family pet, its treated differently. Also expect 10-20 hours of training a week.

But in your case you can have a great family pet. That likes guns, can retrieve stuff for you and big enough to scare people when they come to your door but yet lick your kids faces. Start with obedience and work from there. Post pics when you get him/her.
