Contemplating competing at a match in Central America (Costa Rica) in the spring and I'm researching flights, etc. A direct flight from Calgary is a non-starter so transiting through the USA is the most likely course of action.

I know that my valid Form 6NIA is not the appropriate document for my handgun while only temporarily in America and there is some sort of State Dept paperwork necessary.

Can anyone provide advice on where to proceed?

You're right about the Form 6 NIA. We tried to do the right thing for the Ecuador WS a few years back. Even with help from some people in the NRA, we couldn't get the right paperwork established from US State department for the 30+ Canadians going.

Bascially, we were told use the Form6 NIA (which we got for some other match) and hope for the best with US Customs.

In my case, both in and out; US Customs saw my next boarding pass and waived me through (and on the way home I even had to overnight in Miami) - as far as I know, no one got held up from Canada.

As they say; YMMV.

Yes, no problems transiting the US on the way to Ecuador.

Hong Kong...different story. :p

I flew to the Phillippines last year for the Phillipine Nationals via Norhtwest Airlines transiting USA (Chicago or Detroit) then off to Japan then to Manila. Entering the US at Pearson US customs just checked my passport and my Form 6NIA. Let me through. But my flight was Northwest all the way. No problems.

I was more concerned about the Japan leg of the trip at first but no probs whatsoever. This was October last year..

Your form 6 is valid with a US hunting license, available on-line from Alaska or North Dakota. Section 12 if you possess a valid US hunting license jump to question 14, you miss the invitation section entirely. Transit through the US is not a problem.
