i just got my beretta 92fs today and i need to find a locking transport case. went to a few local shops here in ottawa but didn't see anything i liked. im looking for a metal case with combination lock and space for 2 pistols, a few mags and ammo. i tried looking on the sponsor sites but couldnt find anything.
what do you guys use to carry your handguns? i checked out a few of the pelicans but their dimensions are a little on the thick side.

Lebarons on Merivale has Vanguard multi pistol case for $60 or so. (I bought the last one on Friday :) )

It comfortably holds 3 pistols.

Bigger is better because experience says you might outgrow a 1 or 2 pistol case before the year is out <grin>

did you take the last one? i was there today and all i saw was some plastic cases and a few cheap metal ones.

You won't need any space for ammo in the case, because you can't carry ammunition in the same case as the pistol. Must be in a separate case. This includes any loaded magazines. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am mistaken . . . but I keep my magazines separately just so I can load them up at home and save time getting started at the range.

Maybe this helps and gives you more options for a pistol case . . . ammo and loaded mags can always go into a tin box or a range bag.

The Vanguard is a good deal. I use a cheap plastic Doskocil or similar case for my handguns, that I can attach a good lock to. Have a couple of bigger, higher quality ones for taking more than one gun to the range, and each of my pieces has it's own locking case. (20 or 30 Pelicans would be just too much . . .:rolleyes:)

I honestly don't think the guns care what you carry them in, and I would rather pull a nice gun out of a cheap case than worry about the case getting dinged when I throw it into the trunk...
Your results may vary.

i have a 511 backpack and 2 soft zip-up cases for my guns, it's a lot lighter and legal as long as you have a lock on the fabric case and trigger lock. and you don't have to worry about people staring at your case with locks on it.

question: does anyone know if it's ok to take your gun to the range using city transit?

You are confusing storage regulations with transport regulations. You can carry ammunition in the same case as the pistol. It may be in the same case. This includes loaded magazines. The pistol must be unloaded. The pistol cannot have a loaded magazine inserted into it. the pistol cannot have a loaded magazine attached to it.

When storing the pistol and ammunition, if you wanted to store it in this same manner, you would have to ensure that it was stored in a safe or vault.

Having said that...some sports, such as IPSC, may effectively prohibit the carry of ammunition and the pistol in the same case. I suspect that this is the origin of your understanding. So...yes, if you were going to an IPSC match, you'd be correct.

I too would recommend lockable soft cases inside a larger, lockable bag or pack. It is lighter, more versatile, and much lower in profile.

Some jurisdictions and at least one province (Quebec) have instituted restrictions on what a transit passenger may carry with them. These restrictions are not federal, they are local. For anyone to be able to answer your question accurately, they would first have to know where you are talking about.

i didnt know that you can use a soft case or bag. i thought it had to be in a secure hard case. what's the point of putting putting a lock on a bag though? you can just cut it with a knife...

what do you guys mean when you say soft case? plastic?

boomer you have a good point i think i will save some money on the case to buy something nicer to put in it...

Both are locked.

When you get home, pistol comes out of the rug and goes into the safe.

Alternatively, if your safe is large enough, you could put your entire range bag into the safe.
