I've read lots of talk about not being able to ship a scope from the US to Canada, but couldn't find much about taking one in your checked bag on an airline.
I'm assuming it's also illegal, but the law doesn't make sense to begin with so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks

If it's illegal for a company to ship, what makes you think you can just go get one and bring it back? LOL

Your assumptions are correct.

Exporting is the issue. Wether it is you, or the company makes no difference.

There are permits that can be had, but likely not worth it.

That was my guess but I thought maybe it was something about commercial export and if it's carried on a person it wouldn't be commercial anymore.
Camera Land NY has some good deals right now......

Cameraland won't ship scopes to Canada, and you can'tpersonally transport a scope out of the US without the neccessary permits. Mur

Nothing to do with commercial. It's all exporting a controlled item without permits.

Doesn't matter if you have it shipped, drive it, fly it, ride your bicycle, or paddle your canoe with it in your deerskin backpack. You are bringing a controlled item out of the US illegally. You do not want to be caught in the US trying to bring a scope out. It's viewed the same as having a bag of weed, $25K fine and up to 10 years in prison.

Exporting a scope from the US is NO DIFFERENT than exporting a full firearm or even a single piece of brass!!! The penalties are all the same.

For others reading this thread, these are US EXPORT laws, not Canadian IMPORT laws.

fixed :D

Thank the Liberals. We had a chance to be exempt from all this nonsense but they declined. Keep it in mind every election. - dan

Dan is right. I'd forgotten about our option to be exempt. Maybe we should ask the Conservatives to ask the Americans to again consider an exemption for Canadians. Reducing Govt paper work and increasing trade sounds like a win, win situation to me.

This may be the Best Fix on the boards so far. Good Job Paatz.

Stupid laws. Pretty damn stupid. Not sure they point. Makes no bloody sense that a country like the US makes shipping scopes and barrels impossible into canada. No worry barrels cost 250 in the US and 400 in canada. Import duties, paperwork and taxes. Makes no sense to me. Heck some vendors will not ship anything hunting related. Even ear plugs are tough to buy online.

No scopes, if you want to legally export U.S. firearms and scopes you must join a Mexican drug cartel, move south of the Rio Grande and make it a habit of crossing back and forth into the U.S. illegally before you can legally buy and export ATF approved Guns, ammo, and sighting devices. Hey I don't make this stuff up, I just comment on it.

Exactly how would one get caught in the US with said item? At Every border crossing iv'e been through you get searched coming into the country, not leaving.

I would not chance not being able to cross again for the sake of saving a few bucks.

+1 I like being able to visit the USA, and being caught smuggling arms/ammunition/optics, is a sure way to be banned from entering the USA .
