Transporting my Handgun

Hi guys, I recently bought a 5.11 range ready bag to take my pistol to the shooting range. To use the bag as it is built to transport my pistol, I would have to put a padlock onto the zipper strings.. but I have a feeling that this wouldn't be "sturdy" enough (RCMP law's for transporting). What are your guy's opinions? Just take my pistol in its black plastic case and put it inside the 5.11 bag?

Can you or anyone else get into the bag without tools once it's locked? That's pretty much the standard. When I took my club's probationary shooting course one of the instructors had a bag like that but it was meant to take a lock.

Maybe if you pulled hard enough you could pull one of the zipper things right off.. Still don't feel quite confident that this would be adequate. Unfortunately I think I will have to bring the hardcase inside the bag.

Fortunately my Plano locked case fits right inside my cheapo LA Police Gear range bag, though it is tight with the two locks that the stupid plano case needs to keep secure.
That Plano case was not the wisest $10 bucks I've ever spent.

Someone who is strong enough can probably pull a zipper apart, so the lock would be completely bypassed. Maybe some zippers are stronger than others, but I remember ruining some jackets when the zipper separated while zipped up. I could never figure out how to manually put them together.

You can break a zipper apart by pushing a ballpoint pen through it; that being said there's plenty of people that use pistol rugs with a small brass lock to transport. You have to figure out if you are comfortable playing in the grey areas of the rules.

Unloaded, firearm locked in an locked sturdy, opaque container is all you need to meet the RCMP requirements to be legal. If you feel that you want to go further into theft prevention, have at it. There's nothing in the legal requirements for it to be in a bomb proof container. My Condor 42" rifle double rifle bag is what I use to carry my restricted in. If a zipper breaks and there isn't something to loop a padlock through, then I'll just use my knife and improvise since that bag will be tossed out anyway when I get home.

You think someone intent on stealing your guns is going to sit around for even a minute trying to break into your bag or hardcase? They'd walk in, pickup your case like it's their own and leave the range within 15 seconds THEN take their time trying to open your case when they get home.

The midway range bag can handle 2 pistols inside the plastic case with all the stuff you need. Sell the 5.11 and get a midway.

Don't want to sell the 5.11. I like it, just wondering people's opinions on transporting legally. For now I will put the hard cases inside the 5.11

Restricted and prohibited firearms

Unload the firearms; and
Attach secure locking devices to the firearms; and
Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container; and
Remove the bolts or bolt carriers from any automatic firearms (if removable).

Dictionary definition of contanier:
noun
1. anything that contains or can contain something, as a carton, box, crate, or can.

questions to ask yourself
do you consider it a container by definition?
Is it sturdy?
Can you secure a lock?
If you answered yes to all 3 of these questions and you feel a judge would answer the same, you should be fine

The bag can not be easily opened without tools. A ball point pen is a tool. Given the right tool you can break into a hard case just as easily.
I wouldn't waste my money on another case to carry the gun. The bag is fine.
