i've been shooting 5 stand for a few months and love it, but i still have no idea what trap and what skeet is. i'd like to give it a try, since the 5 stand range is only open one night a week, while you can shoot trap and skeet 4 days a week. i shoot a Auto-5 with a 28" vent rib barrel & fixed full choke. i'm gonna have it reamed out soon so it's steel safe, whats the best choke to have it reamed to that will good all around for trap, skeet 5 stand and hunting? i also plan to get some extra barrels with different chokes, or have one modified for screw in chokes.

in a nutshell Skeet is 8 shooting stations arranged in a semi-circle where you shoot at targets from a high and/or low house. You always know the angle of the target from a given position. Targets are thrown as singles or as doubles, depending on which station you are at (minimum of 2 targets per station and maximum of 4). best choke option is Skeet or Skeet 1. Trap is shot from 5 seperate stations arranged in a straight line with the targets always going away from you, but you never know the angle or from where (left or right side of the house). Tarp is started at the 16 yard line and as you get beter you can move all the way back to the 27 yard line. best chokes are in the modified to full range). both games are challenging, and time well spent best all around choke as a "do-it-all" is probably modified.

if you go to the remington site there are good how to documents on Trap/Skeet, i'd post a link but i don't know if i'm allowed to now /w the new rules... good luck

Trap

Skeet

hr, you big chicken. These are more designed to give a beginner a set of ground rules for starting at these clay sports. Best thing to do is head out with a flat of shells to a club, and start shooting.

Lots of guys shoot modified choke at trap, (16 yard) but prefer less choke for skeet. If you shoot skeet with a modified, you need to be a better shot. I would bore to a modified choke, and shoot all day.

Well, I met Kevin out at the WTSC and we did a couple of skeet and one trap. He did very well for a guy new to wingshooting, especially with a Full choke on the skeet field. Heck, he did very well, period. He had a big smile on his face. And he now knows why eye protection is necessary at skeet!

I have to say I absolutely fell apart at the trap field, embarassingly so. Good thing we did that last. I can't blame the gun because I've done trap well with it before. Moon alignment, wrong sandals, didn't brush my teeth, the usual suspects.

Regardless, we had fun!

I wouldnt touch the barrel you have. It's a good barrel for trap on the gun you have. If you think a new barrel or choke is going to help that much see if you can find a 26" Improved Cyl. barrel or one with tubes for use in skeet and 5 stand and sporting clays. Alot of guys make an overly big deal about chokes. Chokes change your pattern size by inches. When you miss its usually by feet. I shoot skeet and sporting clays with my Rem 3200 Trap O/U thats choked Full/X-Full and dont realy have that much of a difference in score than when usieng my open choked skeet gun. It just depends on the day and if I'm on or not.
Personaly I'd spend more money on shells and shooting and less money and time worrying about chokes. You'll end up a better shot in the long run

yeah i'm hooked. not planning on touching the barrel, but will try and find another one with a Skeet choke. in trap i got 18 at the 16 yard, will have to move back a bit next time, make it more challenging. those Challenger loads are the only target loads i've seen that produce a muzzle flash! :D

Trap is the one that requires a moaning, deep, elongated unrecognizable call for the bird......Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll and get teased by skeet shooters about how easy trap shooting is.

Skeet is where you get to wear a skirt, shoot the same 25 target presentations over and over and get teased by trap shooters about how easy skeet shooting is.

I love them both but I have a lot more fun and success with skeet.
