Trap shooting with the 410 bore. A must try

I know this subject has been discussed at length but I'm bringing it back to life again lol,

I shoot my dedicated trap guns for ATA practice and then shoot a traditional field gun just for fun "stretch there legs" so to speak, I don't do much bird hunting so I like to get them out every now and again basically.

Had my 16 gauge stevens bolt action i got from my father years ago out, shot a 21 not to shappy if i do say so.

Long story short it was my Mossberg 500 in 410 turn, finally found some 7 1/2's and tried at the 16 yards line.

Its been stated if you can hit 1 you can hit 25 I hit a whopping 10 lol.

Gun fit was a huge factor I'm 6' 2" and need to do some stock work to get it to fit me better and then try again.

Anyone else try it , it was a blast and one of the clubs members said his best was a 17, so I have a goal now, might even get a plaque on the wall, probably not
 
Never a 410. About 40 years ago (different world) we locked the trap on straight aways and brought out the .22s. All from station 3. IIRC, I hit 7 - and no, I did not win the day. I have shot trap with the 28ga - with mixed results 27/50 and 45/50.
 
About a month ago a friend came over with his clay throwing machine and we tried using a couple 410s
I was using a mossburg shockwave that I had modified with an adj stock and I was really surprised on how well I did with it
We used factory federal #8 and some of my reloads which are also #8
I got something like 8 hits out of 10 so not to bad
 
Shot an old vintage H&R my dads friend gave me hit a few at 16 ,moved up to the back of the trap house did much better. Patterned it low to the left but really couldn't complain for a 30's build that was enough especially at the price of shells.
 
I've shot my sxs 410 and my Stevens 301 turkey 410 for trap. I do much better with the sxs XF choke if the Stevens throws a very tight pattern
It's a fun waste of shells
 
As ‘pre-teens’ we shot at blackbirds overhead and mice under our feet with our .22 rimfires loaded with CIL shot shells. Stepping up to our 410s latter was like shooting magnums by comparison!!
Going from BB guns to pellet guns to 22’s to 410’s was the progression and it mirrored our maturity into manhood by the rip old age of 15. I’m sure there are a few old farts on CGN that can relate, some of the youngins still have no clue.
Now that I was able to buy a few cases of 410 I may actually try to shoot two rounds of trap, first from the 16yd line and then while standing up on top of the trap house. That might be my new handicap. 😀cheers
 
I shot a round of skeet with my .410 sxs. I don’t recall my score but somewhere around 7 or 8. I load black powder for it so the barrels get smoking hot in pretty short order when shooting that fast. By station 3, it gets hard to hold with its VERY slim splinter forend. There was only 1 or 2 other shooters that day. Would be much better with more shooters to give more time for the barrels to cool between shots. Still a lot of fun though and someday I hope to find another sxs hammer gun in .410, but one that can shoot smokeless.

My 28 and 16 gauge SxS shotguns both have English stocks, two triggers, and splinter foreheads, so I wear gloves for skeet, somtimes a winterglove on my left hand. Both are fixed IC/IM, so not ideal for skeet, but I do shoot some clean rounds with both.
 
Just found a few boxes of 3” 7.5’s locally so I’m going to give the wife’s Mossberg 500 in .410 a run in a couple of weeks, should be interesting. I took the .410 with me last Trap event but only had 2 1/2” shells so decided to pass until I had 3”

That's awesome, found some #8's online 2 1/2 but there sporting clays shells so there pretty fast. 1300fps i think
Going to try again with my charles daly in the new year.

Let us know how you make out 👍🏼

Brought out the Charles Daly , Done some gun fit mods like taped on some bala wood to raise the rib and a slip on cheek riser.

Shot a 7 from the 16 yard line , not a good score but I was using a improved mod Choke.
I used it was on 5 stand and forgot to change to full.

It was also early afternoon and the temp in southern Ontario is dropping fast which didn't help because I haven't found gloves the fit my hand that I can shoot in.

Still good fun and going to try again for sure.
 
Tried the 410 on the skeet field a few times and on the SC course...pretty sweet humbling !
I had my 28 ga out to the trap field last fall...I was thinking I was wayyyy under gunned for the task at hand. Think I had 8 or 9 going into my last station (#3)
Yeaaaa...that was until I broke a couple way out there birds, that got away from me ...definitely not under power...lol Breaking those two long birds just proved how bad I am ;)
like my buddy says...it ain't the gun...it's the nut on the back of the stock LMAO
 
I've found that in order to get consistent breaks with my Rizzini 410 over and under I have to use IM and Full chokes, Mod and IC just open up far too soon and I won't even use them on the skeet range where the targets are relatively close.
For sporting clays I'm pretty happy if I'm north of 50% with the 410 but I still have to try trap.
I'm hand loading AA hulls with half an oz of number 9 shot but I'd like to find some 3 inch hulls to load number 8 shot with 11/16 oz for the longer shots.

I am using the factory skeet chokes in my K20 for skeet, with 1/2 ounce of #9 in AA hulls. I do get a lot of marginal breaks, and the odd loss, even though everything felt perfect, but for the most part, the more open chokes do work for me.
