Trapping Tree Squirrels

Can anyone offer some advice on how to trap tree squirrels?

I live in the city so I'm trying to keep the trap out of sight. I'd like to put em on the fence but that'd be sure to cause trouble. Currently I have a Conibear trap baited with bread and peanut butter in my apple tree. I hung the trap from one of the springs so that it sits on a branch. I'm not sure if hanging the trap this way is effective or even if the trap will work properly as it is sitting on it's side (springs pointing straight up and down.)

Any suggestions?
 
Don't bother putting a trap IN a tree. If there is bait and it's on the ground, squirrels will come.

When I lived at home, we used a modified live rat trap that my grandfather used to make in Holland... just a cage with a large steel door that dropped when the trigger plate was stepped on. Peanut butter was the best bait going!

But like I said... if you put it on the ground, it will be JUST as effective.
 
When I trapped I used to use the small No. 0 leg hold traps at the holes the squirels used to go underground, or under trees. I had a lot more luck using this method than trying to catch them in the trees, those little buggers have to come home some time, and when they did they found there way to a stetcher.
 
I've also used rat traps. I put them in the tree and tied them to a branch with enough slack so that they will hang and not get out.
 
You catch alot of them in box sets set for fisher and martins in the north. If you live in an area with other people around to see, use the live trap set in the same place with the peanut butter or peanuts and tell your neighbour you will release them far far away.
 
ok friend... here 's what to do.

Get yourself a hav-a-heart trap in squirrel size (roughly 30$) Take it single door. (Canadian tire).

Bait with peanuts (bait area prior to setting trap). Set trap on top of a pick-nik table... you don't want to get a skunk in there (they WILL go in to get the peanut butter!).

People will maybe see the trap. It's humane. Won't harm the critter. You can always say you'll go and drop it off in the forest somewhere.

When rodent in the trap, take it indoors. Got a bucket??????

This is what I do, live trap door style. With peanut butter at the base on the tree between the houses. Gets them every time, then off to a 20lt pail of water in the garage. It work so good a guy down the street is still using it, and I don't mind. I have only seen a few here and there, more bunnies than any thing, but I will use the bow in the garden in the early morning out the window on them I guess,lol.
 
CHEEP way to catch em :D
Run a 2inch thick strait brach from one tree to another find two trees 4 to 8 ft apart.
Now tie that pole about six ft high strait from tree to tree.
Get brass picture frame hanging wire and make 6 or so snares and set them 6 in apart along the pole.
The brass wire can be tied around the pole then bent in a arch out then back so the noose is about 1 inch above the pole dead center.

The little rats use this pole to cross from tree to tree its makes them feel safe :D as they run along the top of your pole they will one by one hit the snares and i have come back and had 5 furrys hanging there linched :D
 
great trick Dingus (I'll use it next time I have to deal with squirrels:)), but Andrewe doesn't want to get the neighbors all upset

Dangling bushytails wouldn't please them I think.
 
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll modify things a little.

I should have mentioned that I don't want the trap on the ground because we have rabbits that I don't mind hanging around. I would also worry about pets.
 
I just trapped 10 of them and all you need is a squirrel trap and shelled peanuts with peanut butter holding them down to the tray. replace the peanut butter each day if you are unsuccessfull on any given day. I drowned them then buried them.

your suggestions are all good, but their lacking one thing.....

they don't involve launching the squirrels into the next galaxy, that would kill two birds with one stone. Think about it; if you could kill the squirrel and dispose of it at the same time, wouldn't you be saving your precious CGN surfing time.

Welll the setup worked great. Less than a day and one squirrel dead. The Conibear broke his neck.

So now I have a dead squirrel. I know they are a fur bearing species so someone must buy the skins. Anyone know a fur buyer (the closer to Winnipeg the better) who might be interested once I have a stack? Also How do the fur buyers like the skins prepared?

I saw those squirrel launching videos a while ago and after I had a good laugh I realized that I would not be attempting such a thing. There's too many reasons not to do it and the trouble I could get into isn't worth the comedy.
