Trapping Tree Squirrels

in Fur Fish and Game magazine I once saw an add by Mepps fishing lures....tail fur wanted.

Try local flyfishing stores too...

You'll need to take a scalpel, slit the underside of the tail and remove all the vertebrae...carefull, skin is very very thin, specially at the tip. pin on styrofoam and let dry with granules (not powder) of borax on to. Borax is available at Drugstores.

Thanks Rabadswompe. I already checked with Mepps and they only accept black, grey and fox squirrel tails.

Will the Borax completely cure the hide or is this simply enough to get them to the fur buyer?
 
Borax is an anti-septic AND a bug reppellent... so when the skin is curing, you won't get dermestid beetles munching away at your work.

Boric Acid (borax) is used in taxidermy and tannery

What type of squirrel are they?
 
Most jurisdictions allow for the destruction of squirells to protect property.

Alot of house fires start and a lot of people have burned because a rodent chewed wiring.

If the nieghbours are soft explain to them that a squirrels favorite food is a freshly hatched song bird. The bird usually lives for the first 5 or ten minutes of being eaten.

Oh yeah and flesh eating disease, tell them about flesh eating disease.

Rabbies

Last one would be the very harmful mould that develops when they chew holes in your house and let in water.

Your job is to protect your home and family be as efficient as possible and nieghbours be damned, what are they doing gawking in your yard?

They're red squirrels. I went legal and bought a trapping license because it is required.

I know all the good reasons to exterminate them but it's pretty hard to convince people who think they're cute. No matter what if I try to explain I will look bad. At worst I would expect a visit from the police which could go bad even though I know I'm legal. Of course they'd check with the CFC registry and now I'll have to answer questions like "How many squirrels have you shot in your back yard?" or "What do you know about Mrs. Smith's missing cat?"

Anyhow. Does anyone have a favorite website that'll explain how to tan these little buggers? My chihuahua has taken a big liking to the corpse. Maybe I'll make her a coat. :D
 
Hey we need some pics of em eating baby birds :D That will turn the Ah there cute people off.
I never taned any of mine just dryed them on little strechers skin side out (Like the wire Things for drying socks only smaller) or carve little streaching boards out wood, they look like little surf boards. Tapered sawen Ceader shakes are easy to make em out of.
Then once there dry turn them fur side out. as long as you keep them dry there fine.
and good point on the Borax rub that in the wet skin good, works great.
