Hi,

I am starting to think about a modest plains game safari in Africa. First thing I heard is that I would be better off renting a rifle on site rather than bringing my own (.338 Win mag) from Canada.

I have always hunted and or shooted competition with my own rifles and ammo and have no intent of changing that pattern.

Can somebody, please, give me some info or guidelines on the subject.

Tks in advance,

BB

Fly Star alliance so your rifles get transferred by the airline. Go through Frankfurt or London, no permits required. If going to South Africa use a firearms permit company like African Sky house. If going to Namibia download and fill out their one page form and give it to the police that give you your guns, at the airport in Windheok. Don't know about the rest of Africa. Also make sure you get a temporary export permit from Canada, apply online at import/ export controls. Takes Bout a week to get it.

last time we went to London and transited there were no need for a permit but we needed the permission from the Queen to land in Great Britain with foreign firearms.

Frankfurt police is asking for a permit better to have just in case your transit is stopped. but germans are easier to deal as everything is handy and ready.

whatever the laws are do not forget to print out all the infos on the web given by the airline you are travelling with. and do not hesitate to ask for a supervisor or manager if something is no working well.

at the arrival depending when and where you are heading papers will be ready and all paid if fees needed, do not hesitate to ask the outfittter any tips or hints for your transfer.

all the best and do not forget when you are hooked is forever.

Frankfurt no longer requires the permit. I've went through London twice in the last 5 years no permission needed, or the airline takes care of it.

On my hunt, I rented a rifle and swear never to do it again. The rifle was a classic Shultz and Larsen and very accurate. Cover 3 with a dime at 100. However,

1. We were not able to get the 7 x 64 Norma ammo the PH usually used and had to settle for Privi Partisan. After a couple of days, we found some of the bullets out of the shells and most could be removed with a good shake. None were pass throughs which they should have been in this caliber.
2. The scope on the rifle was no name (Lynx???) and wouldn't hold zero after a day bouncing in the Bakkie. It was to have been replaced but it's replacement was stolen the previous week. It required zeroing each day.
3. I found using a gun I wasn't used to challenging and hated looking like a nube each time I had to try and push down the cartridge to make the chamber cold as my fingers were too big for the machined out loading gate. Never mind a reverse functioning safety, etc. I think for safety and performance reasons gun familiarity is a must.

That's my experience - YMMV.

"Modest plains game" to me sounds like RSA or Namibia. Travel through Frankfurt and get the proper export/import paperwork from Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Should be no trick.
