Travelling to competitions by air.

Anyone here do it?

I am talking about domestic flights within Canada, not international.


I understand that you should have no trouble checking your non-restricted in as baggage, I see hunters at the airport all the time with their gun cases.


What about your carefully researched and tested hand loads? I am pretty sure that ammunition is not allowed in checked baggage due to dangerous goods regulations.

So, what do you do?,... get over it and shoot factory match ammo purchased locally? Try to fit your reloading gear into the weight limit? Ship ammo ahead by ground?


Any tips, tricks, horror stories?
 
You are permitted to travel with 5 kg of ammunition in your checked luggage. Must be in commercial packaging - not bagged in your socks - and declared on check-in.
 
Hmm... I wouldn't have thought that, interesting, Thanks.

It figures,.... I am stuck with a little ziploc bag with my toothpase, shampoo, and deodorant safely inside, shoes off etc.

5kgs is about a hundred rounds or so if my guessing is correct. Is that enough for a tactical / sniper match?

Along with a declaration that the gun is unloaded.

DON'T FLY SCARE CANADA!

They charge $50 per gun extra.

And the rifle and the ammuntion can't be packed together. Checked luggage is routinely x-rayed. If you do not declare the ammunition, it will be found, and you will hear your name over the PA system. And you may be taking a later flight.
As RePete has pointed out, Air Canda will charge you for the priviledge of having your rifle in your checked luggage. As I understand it, they levy the charge going and coming.

CanWest is the choice for domestic flight with firearms.

Their website have perfect details for travel with firearms and ammo, and if you wanna play extra safe and ask them questions via email, they will reply your question quickly!
 
Thanks for the info guys.

Just making plans for this summer. I Plan to get out to some courses / competitions outside Manitoba.

With the price of gas, and the time involved, it's a tough call whether to drive or fly. Especially if I want to get out to BC from Winnipeg.

Even with the air miles The red airline doesn't seem like much of a choice with all their extra charges. Might have to book ahead on West Jet.
