So... I am just trying out treestand hunting this year, and would just like to know one thing. How close do you park your vehicle (truck,atv..bike)to the area that you plan on hunting from? How long is the minimum distance it should be from your stand? I don't want to spook any potential bucks from my stand. Thanks all in advance.
 
I park a good 10 minute walk from my stand, more depending on where Im hunting. Having a light stand is nice when you have to walk through a lot of dense bush, well worth the extra $$ over the cheaper much heavier stands.
 
Usually about 500 yards...Just far enough walk to
warm-up...but not sweat. It's pretty thick bush where
I hunt...so they might hear the ATV, but not
react to it negatively. :)
 
My friend goes up in the afternoon, does the evening hunt and stays in the stand overnight. That way the area has really settled. He has even done this in early December. He is hard-core.

I guess so. I would be afraid to wake up upside down, mangled if lucky and a few feet from the ground if my cheap a$$ harness worked. That is hardcore.

Why would he stay all night? half to an hour before sun up should be plenty enough time for everything to settle.

My uncle built a permanent stand up about 40 feet, its completely insulated, has a shingled roof, comfy seat, and a heater. He hunts in a T-shirt! I'm actually quite jealous. Its definitely more of a tree house than a tree stand.

Ill stick with my portable gorilla stand and strap-on umbrella and still take a bigger buck though :D
 
I park about a quarter mile away. If you move in quitely and watch the wind direction so you don't stink up the site things will settle pretty quick. Still hunt your way in and you might get a shot as well. I usually go to my stand a about 4 oclock and sit till dark.

Good advice !!!

Proper planning on getting to your stand regarding wind direction, walking slow.... Chances are you will hear the deer you scare up walking to your stand but no light to get off a shot....usually they don't know what you are anyway's and they are just reacting to the noise along with the fact you don't sound like a deer (2 feet instead of 4). I always grunt twice once I'm in my stand to settle down anything in earshot.

It's amazing how many times I've gone to great lengths to get to my tree stand stealthily and spent the morning seeing nothing. Yet, when I get back to the truck I see fresh tracks within 30 ft. of my truck. Kinda' makes me want to put a lazyboy in the back of the truck and hunt in style.

Seems like most deer living in populated areas are used to seeing vehicles, machinery sitting on the road or in a field. What most deer are wary about are movement, sound and scent.

Good advice so far, I seem to see more animals still hunting than from a stand so far.. but blacktails are not easily patterned. At least not bucks anyway lol. As for the treehouse I promised my wife that I will build her one for us both so she can come hunt with me. The heaters a sweet idea, i guess i could make it run off a car battery.:)
 
Thats for sure. I've seen deer all around machinery feeding but if you step out of the vehicle poof they are gone. Another observation is a field I drive by on the way to my stand. There are always deer out there feeding but if I stop again they move fast. Deer in populated areas are some of the wariest creatures out there.

I've found that deer way back in the boonies seem to be a lot less flighty.

Hmm...definately a different definition of hunting than I would use :p

How far to park your vehicle depends on type of terrain as well!
I like to be about 1/2 way to my stand (when I use one) as it gets light enough to shoot :)
 
I would go with atleast 300 yards away. You can also park the atv close or on a trail that you are not covering, ie might divert some deer your way that you would never see.
 
I like to go in about a kilometer or so. It depends on the terrain, though. Just rember, you pack out what you pack in (as well as a few hundred pounds of animal, hopefully!).

There are several reasons. The first is that in some areas, for example where he hunts now, there is an ATV closure every morning until 10:00am (IIRC), and the area he hunts is several miles up old skidder trails. It would be foolhardy to try and do that walk in the dark.

He also believes that the forrest "settles" more if he has been up there for such a long time. He has one stand that is partially enclosed for wind and rain protection, but the others are open. He has been overnight in a completely open stand (basically a V made by two huge branches in a tree) in December! He wore heavy clothes and pulled a sleeping bag up to his chest. He shot a record book non-typical mulie in the morning. He figures it is worth the effort.

I've done it once and nearly froze my arse off. I was like "please come up sun, please come up sun".
 
I always park way outta the friggen way. Back on the road even. Usually have a long walk ahead of me. Its ok, don't want my truck shot up either.
