treestand hunters

Are you hunting on public land? One thing to consider is that if you can get your vehicle close to your stand, everyone else can too. Guys will set their stand beside a trail then act astonished when someone drives past them.

I always park way outta the friggen way. Back on the road even. Usually have a long walk ahead of me. Its ok, don't want my truck shot up either.

I didn't mean he is lazy, as that is certainly not the case. When I say miles of old skidder trail I mean literally miles and it is very overgrown with some serious washouts etc. It wouldn't be safe to do it in the dark. You could twist/break your ankle at a hundred different points on the trails.

When we hunted down the blackwater in PG we used to just go in before sunrise, but that was through willows and fairly flat country. That is different.

I also agree with not setting up near a road. The interesting thing is that even if you set up in the edge of a cutblock, lets say 600 yards from the road, you will see a wide variety of escape and travel routes that are completely hidden from the road.

Depending what stand we use we park our car either 300yds away or 90% of the time we park the car 100yds away. How far you park depends on the terrain that your in. While bow hunting we always talk to each other when we are going to our stands. We make sure that we are in our stands a half hour to 45minutes before legal shooting time. Many times we can here the deer snorting and stomping their hoof at us. They usually come back as we settle down. From my experience I find that deer are very curious. They will actually come back to see what spooked them.

I like having my truck within eyeshot or earshot because of vandalism and break-ins. If not I try and hide it somewhere. I usually don't run into people in the areas I hunt, but I don't want to leave my truck on some FSR all day, just in case. Good to know I can stash it in the areas I hunt. :)

I usually park a good 200-300 yards away or so at the entrance to the fields that I hunt. Mind you I know deer have come up to people's ATV's when they were just parked there. They are cagey animals but still quite curious. I am not sure there is any hard fast rule. Depending if I am getting in really early I might take the ATV quite close, unload, drive back and then walk back with much less gear.
