My #1 son (James) came to the range with me and we were shooting, he is having a lot of grief with his 375 Ruger brass, imagine that (hornady chit). So I gave him one of my 9.3 by 300 WM and said try this out. He chambered it up and it headspaced like a dream, touched it off and voila, W-W 375 Ruger brass. Now I'll do a case capacity check and if all is as it seems then he's gonna make up 100 or so and end his Horn brass grief. Will keep you posted on developments.

Kevan....this may be of interest to you as well as I recall you saying that you were having brass grief too, with your 375 Imposter

Forgive me I don't reload yet...
Hornady factory loads shoot the tightest groups in my rifle. Significantly better then other top names.
What's wrong with their brass? I plan on reloading in the coming year and would love some one with more experience to comment.

I use some hornady brass for 223 and works well. I have tried it in 30-06 and didnt seen to last near as long as winchester brass for me.
 
I personally love W-W brass and use it in every cartridge I can buy it in, I have made all my Wby cartridges from W-W brass, 257 from 264 WM, 300 from W-W 300 H&H 340 from W-W 375 H&H. Quality control is sagging these days but I still buy it and cull a few, 'cause it is still the toughest brass on the market and the lightest. Second choice is Rem but that may be changing to Lapua from recent findings. Regardless these are the top 3 in my opinion. Nosler does not make brass, they buy it and sort and weigh and prep it but it could be anybodys brass. Their 375 Imposter (Ruger) is Hornady, for sure and I'm pretty sure their 300 Wby is Rem.

I solved the problem the easy way Douglas... got rid of both my 375 imposters lock, stock, and barrel !
However, with respect to Hornady brass I have yet to learn my lesson as I bought a box of Hornady 404 Jeffery brass that will not size properly using either C-H dies or RCBS Custom dies.
Bertram, A-Square, and some German 404 brass all size and load perfectly.
Strange because any other Hornady brass I have used works well ?
 
Excellent decision Kevan, getting rid of the Imposters. Dying anyway, will be totally obsolete in 10 years.
How much brass you got for the 404, cause I got a bunch I'm going to send ya. PM me your address. This is all left over from when I built my 30-404 25 years ago, some of it is straight walled basic and some is true 404, it's all good quality stuff I just can't remember whose it is, but I got it from Huntingtons 25 years ago and I'll never use it.

Just ran down and checked, got 36 Bell basic straight walled and annealed, I've messed with some of them, may be salvagable and may not but there is 25 or so good for sure and I have 60 new A-Square formed 404............Just PM me an address and they're yours, my friend.

Belted cases have been used in other non belted chambers to make brass when required, usually when there wasn't any other feasible option for brass. After a couple of firings the belt get ironed out. :)

Since NEW KING brass is readily available and works great if you don't overload your ammunition, blowing out belted cases is something to do only if you want to add extra steps to your reloading process.

TomJones, WW cases work great, other than Lapua it's my go to brass of choice for many cartridges. The only rifle brass I really avoid is Federal. :)

Gatehouse; I said on another thread that his current brass has not been pressured up at all and all the primer pockets are tight, it just seems as though the brass has lost it's memory/elasticity. The loads are not hot over the Oehler nor are primers even flattened, but he has to almost pry his bolt up and open.........I've never seen anything like it before in 40 years of loading. There are big shiny marks on the case body where you can see it has been rotated and pulled from the chamber, but no ejector marks, no flat primers, no excessive velocities, no pressure indicators of any kind and like I said primer pockets still good and tight..........most perplexing. Only answer is $hit brass.
 
Every batch of Hornady/Frontier brass I have ever used has been CHIT. .270, 300 WM, 7mm RM. poor neck tension, pockets loosening with normal loads (H4831+130gr bullets at 2950fps making loose pockets after 1 firing???)

I refuse to use Hornady brass.

As do I rem338win, but there are no other choices if one chooses the .375 Imposter. I'm hoping that this little experiment will pan out for the kid and he can buy a couple hundred rounds of W-W 300 WM and get back in the game.
 
As a non reloader I still wonder why my .30-06 shoots Hornady 165sst so well if the bass is so bad.
I am saving all brass from the brands I shot to see what the M70 eats well, but will consider caution on Hornady when I finally get my reloading set up.
It's just funny that the gun loves those factory rounds and shoots them better then any other...
 
TJ....what you are not grasping is that factory loads have no bearing on the reloadability of brass. Many 7.62X39 and other cartridges are factory loaded as to be unreloadable, berden primed, steel cases, multiple flash holes......none of this has any bearing on the initial aspect of the cartridge, only the reloadability. We reloaders look at the reloadability of the case as being more important than the initial load. Hence you will see many different opinions on which is the best (read most reloadable) brass.

I appreciate the advice. Thank you for expaining it to me. I hope to get the Mrs to sign off on reloading soon and this is excellent information.

My m70 30-06 shoots hornady real good as well BUT I dont use the brass for reloading it. I use winchester. My 223 uses some hornady brass and the loads are light with that brass so seems to last fairly well.

Federal brass I fired the factory load and got one reload out of it before it was junked.
 
I had some really bad luck using W-W brass in .222 remington. I had to throw it all out. Bought Lapua for it and the Lapua is top notch and didn't have the same issues as before. My 30-06 W-W brass is fine though. Its the nickel plated stuff (not that it makes it better).
 
Just found the kid's fired cases from Sat so I did the case capacity check.......interesting results;

375 Ruger Horn brass 2.595" long and holds 101.3 grs of Win 748 (this is the powder I use to compare case capacities)

Fireformed W-W 300 WM 2.580" long and holds 105.2 grns of Win 748

Both cases poured to overflowing and leveled with the case mouth, no tapping.

It would appear we have a viable option to Horn brass, with the fireformed W-W having not only as much capacity, but even a little more.
