Tried out some Bluedot in 223 today

Been seeing some info in the uSA about shooting bluedot in a 223 so I thought I would give it a try. I loaded 12,13 & 14gr loads under a 40gr Vmax. Sure was a fun test. My rifle is a Sako Vixen and I got the best group with the 12gr load.
Sure makes shooting gophers with a 223 a lot more affordable, just like shooting a hornet, thats like 580 rounds from one pound of powder. FS
 
I'm interested to hear about your results! I use Varget for .223 right now and I'm loading 26.6gr with 55gr V-max for best results. With loads close to 12gr of Blue dot I could get more then double the rounds from a lb. of powder :D

Did you use any filler?
 
this sounds very interesting a good way to save a few bucks wonder if it would work in a .22-250?

oh this thread should be in the reloading section it might get more exposure its good info.

Like I said the tightest group in my rifle was just under an inch with the 12gr load. As the charge got larger things opened up to an inch and 1/4.
Next time out I'll shot the 14gr first and work my way down to 12gr and see if I get the same results. FS

There is data for quite a variety of cartridges. i have it for 22-250.
55gr bullet 16gr 2872fps
17gr 3000fps
Max load 18gr 3095
There is data for 50gr bullet as well.

PLEASE DO NOT START AT 18GR and work up just to see if you can make it go a little faster. These high burn rate powders can pressure spike easily if misused, which can lead to big trouble for you and your rifle and anyone near by, WHEN IT BLOWS UP. FS
 
Would like to echo Fassteel comments. Have shot a bit of bluedot loads in 223 and really like it. However, in my 223 there is only two grain difference between a really accurate load and having to "really tap" the bolt handle open!:eek: Start low and work up very carefully, don't let the small amounts of powder make you complacent. When pressure peaks, it does so dramatically , just my experience.
 
I've used blue dot in my .223. I love it, not the velocity of the higher charges from what I've read, I havn't chronied mine. However its nice and cool for the barrel with half the powder, I can shoot a lot of gophers before worrying about heat buildup.

Very, very good advice here boys and girls. Just in case someone skipped through the thread without really reading........

Some guns may not even tolerate the 14gr. mentioned.

Seafire is kinda the Bluedot guru. He has done a lot of testing and posted a lot of information on various boards.
 
13gr Bluedot calhoon 37gr DHP in my 12fv. Look at ww.jamescalhoon.com ,informative articles ,to bee or 223. he worked these loads up years ago. biggest benefits are little heat and noise when shooting gophers in acreage country where whiny neighbors live.
