Tried searching "ammo" forum...need help for BP bullets

Does anyone know where a guy can buy bulk .50 cal Thompson Shockwave bullets and sabots?

I really like them...but I just can't swallow the price of a pack of 15 very easily. I would really like to get very acquainted with my T/C Triumph that I bought, but the cost of going to a range to do some serious shooting and sighting in makes it prohibitive.

OR...can someone recommend an ballistically equivalent type of saboted bullet that CAN be bought in bulk to lessen the cost so I can get out and shoot some more?

I currently shoot 100 grains 777 pellets and a 250 bullet w/ a Superglide sabot...

I buy Hornady 44 cal-240gr-HP/XTP pistol bullets in a box of 100. I also buy bulk sabots in a bag of 50. I forget xactly what I paid for them at Wholesale Sports, but they are a lot cheaper than the 15 pac's. My knight rifle likes these bullets, but maybe their not for you. Just an idea.
 
Hi Jack. The Hornady SST is the same bullet and are usually a bit cheaper but I don't think that they sell them in bulk either. Dennis
 
Thanks for the info, guys. It's just that I keep reading in mags and online that guys that shoot modern inlines can make the sport a little more economically feasible if they buy in bulk. Of course....that was a US magazine. Maybe it's easier there, but I would love to buy similar to what Eastwind described: bags of this and boxes of that. I guess you just can't get the Shockwaves in bulk...period.

So I will try to figure out a config that will work for my Triumph...but with Hornady components instead.

They don't seem to sell the SST in bulk and I can't find them on the Hornady website. Perhaps a Barnes Spit-fire TMZ? I don't know who carries Barnes ML products in Canada.

I use the 300gr SST and my CVA loves them, but I'm really thinking of doing what Eastwind suggested (bulk sabots and bulk XTP's)
 
Shockwave & SST's in bulk.

I emailed Hornady direct one day and asked the same question. They eventually replied with "this is a popular request",.......and "we have no intention of bulk sales at this time".

Fortunatley my Knight likes 300gr XTP's and bulk Harvester EZ load sabots.
 
My 1st post on the site!!! Why not go with a Canadian product. I have been shooting "precision rifle" BP bullets for about 4 years. You can also get alot better weight choices for the bullets 175gr 50cal if you want. They are not jacketed but my friends and I all have had great penetration with them...pass-through chest shots at 200yards it not uncommon. Good luck.

Pure lead bullets, especially in sabots, are well suited to speeds around 1800 fps, like those you get with 100 grain powder charges. Unfortunately, you start pushing them faster than that and you'll have problems. Lead bullets tend to have excessive obteration when pushed too hard and will in fact obterate so much that they will melt the side petals on the sabot as the bullet goes up the barrel. This leads to some very erratic flight and obviously a huge loss of accuracy. Shoot them in their performance envelope and they are a great choice but start pushing bullets in sabots past that 1,800fps barrier and jacketed bullets are a must.
 
I will have to rely on your advice...you sound pretty well versed in this area. I'm just going from what i've learned from personal experience...no crono etc. And for me a LONG shot would be 150yards...all of my BP deer have been shot at under 40 yards. Have you had a look at the PR website though, they show MV's of 2100fps on some of their bullets. And they are Canadian!!

I am well famailiar with BP bullets and within their performance envelope they are an adequate hunting bullet but I've done extensive testing with them and they cannot handle speed despite their claims on the Internet. I've seen petals literally melted off sabots from excessive obturation. Sure they'll go 2,100 fps but they won't do it with consistent accuracy. Sabots are the weak link in any high speed load but lead bullets create problems of their own in sabots. That obturation works to a lead bullet's advantage when not confined in a sabot but when encased in plastic, it creates too much friction.
