Get one! They are crap, but fun crap. It bounces around in the truck and I don't have to worry about it. Yesterday I lay down and fired 3 shots off a mound of mittens and toques in a snow bank and got a beauty 1" group on a stump over 200 yards away with my 223 and ammo that was just thrown together. Brush the snow off and throw it back behind the seat.

I like.

If you are handy and get a good one you can get the factory trigger working really nicely.

You were shooting at a mound of kittens?!

Wait....nevermind.

I saw a .30-06 listed for $299 (new) and thought it would be fun to see how cheap one could put together a decent combo (meaning not an el-cheapo scope - I was thinking Weaver fixed 4x or 6x). Then head out to the range with some good reloads and see what happens!

I like my 2. Both shoot great! I ditched the plastic stock for a matching pair of Boyds thumbholes though, that grey hurt my eyes.:D

I recently upgraded my Stevens 200 in .223. Boyds Thumbhole stock, Rifle Basix trigger and an oversized bolt handle from Brownells. It also has a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5x14x40 SF in Burris signature rings. Now I just have to get to the range.

What do you think of the thumbhole grip area? I've only handled one in a gun shop but the grip feels really thin. I guess I'm used to a more substantial stock. Do you feel like you have a solid grip on it?

What was wrong with the quality control?

Apart from heavy triggers, heavy bolt lift and tuppaware stocks, all of which are part of the standard, I hear nothing but good things.

I bought a model 200 a few years ago in 270 win, the rifle nearly had the first shot blow up in the chamber the case actually split in the chamber.I sent the rifle back for warranty and they had to replace the bolt and the barrel, when the gun came back to the dealer i bought it from i traded it on a different rifle as i did not trust the gun anymore.

I just got one for christmas, in .223. first trip to the range I was getting about 2 in inch groups after it was sighted in. Pretty good in my opinion, and I am looking to get a new trigger for it as well as a better stock.

Is it possible that this was ammo failure rather than the gun. I've never heard of any issues. Good thing you didn't get hurt through. Here are a couple of mine:

Your gun will do way better than that. My .223 was shooting moa with factory winchester white box HP's from Wal-Mart when I first got it. Now, with 55gr. V-Max and a bedding job in the plastic stock, it's sub-moa.
