Trigger guard effective on M305B/M1A?

Hi Folks,

While getting lunch today it occurred to me that a trigger lock might not be effective on an M14 style rifle, in light of the way the rifle breaks down. I always think about rifles at lunch.

I won't have a chance to try this out until next week, but figured this must be a known issue (if it is an issue).

So - can a trigger lock on an M305B by bypassed by removing the trigger group and simply sliding out the trigger lock? Does affixing the lock 'tight enough' prevent this from being a possibility?

if someone wants the lock off they'll get it one way or another,but I do think you're right about lifting the trigger guard....

It depends on the lock, but you are correct in your thinking...the fact that you can open the trigger guard will defeat a trigger lock.

The best thing to do is use a cable lock, or simply take the trigger group out of the gun and lock it away separately.

Trigger locks do not work on M1.M1A,M14s. use a cable lock through the action.I always close the bolt on the cable,gently as it will damage or cut the cable.same thing with most lever actions I wrap the cable around the stock and through the lever.cannot the work the lever.

So here's a broader questions based on this - does a trigger lock on an M14 fail to meet the requirement to:

Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired

I imagine a moderately determined person could easily bypass both a properly installed trigger lock and/or action lock - but it would require them 'breaking' the lock by drilling, cutting etc...

Specifically I'm wondering if having a trigger lock that can be removed without destroying the lock means that one would potentially fail to meet the requirements. This is probably very much an opinion question....

On the bright side, if I go out and buy a couple cable locks it means I have two trigger locks that I need to find guns for.

I am using all NRs as tree ornaments this year.

Just kidding, though that would actually be awesome though... This is (hopefully) a theoretical question, since as you say they're not just laying around all over the place. Just wanted to find out if I'm the only scrub using trigger locks on the M305B.

You can use a small padlock that locks the safty to the trigger guard if you want to be safe !

Technically the law says nothing about it being well locked, just that a trigger lock is affixed. The law even specifically states a trigger lock is a secure locking device.

This is what happens when numpties make the regs.

Personally I don't consider something locked if you can circumvent it without unlocking it. I'm sure a judge and jury would probably agree.

A disassembled rifle don't need to be locked. If the trigger group have to be removed to mess with the trigger lock, it's still safe storage in my mind.

+1 trigger group comes out easy enough just remove it

+1 on above or use a cable lock over it. Not only does it prevent one from firing the rifle but I think it won't allow you to remove the trigger assembly as well.

I find putting a cable lock on the action means you have to leave it in open position, compressing the op rod spring.

Trigger locks are useless on an m14.
The only secure method has already been posted and that's a pad lock through the locked safety's hole.

Only if you don’t store it in a secure storage receptacle and depending on the container type (lockable or not) it might be required if checked as baggage on commercial carriers.

A trigger lock is always useless... Doesn't mean that I don't use them though.
