I am relatively new to pistol shooting. Recently, I decided that I wanted to get into IDPA, but before I would, I thought I would improve my pistol shooting first.

I just took a 2-day tactical pistol course, and my problem is predominately with my lack of focus on the front sight. When I draw and fire without thought, I shoot clover groups; Any other time, I don't.

My question is two fold:

1. What would be better recommended for my problem: Fiber optic front sight, or Trijicon HDs? Would one help me focus on the front sight better than another? Has anyone used both? Switched from one to the other? Your thoughts?

I ask because the instructor suggested to give them a try to help draw my eye to the front sight. FYI, the first handgun I ever shot has a fiber optic front and blacked out rear, and I shot that better than I ever have since then.

2. How tall are the Combat Competition Sights? I ask because I just ordered a Safariland 6004 SLS holster, and I want to make sure I will be able to holster my gun with any of the aforementioned sighting systems

Thanks to all who post, and sorry for my noobish question!

When you focus on the front sight you can shoot "clover groups", I would practice dry firing to improve your trigger control, front sight picture and concentration.

It might be a good idea to try a fiber optic front sight with a blacked out rear due to your success with them in the past.

I fully agree with teltec, stick to what has been successful in the past. Obviously there is something about that set up that suits your style, mechanics, etc.

Perhaps! But I'm wondering if the HD sights will do the same thing and allow me to rock tritium... I've heard that fiber optic sights can break over time. Is that true?

You can lose the fiber but they tend to be easy to replace. Personally I prefer black front and rear for accuracy, fibers and the HD sights are meant to aid in speed. If your problem is sight focus you first need to figure out if it's vision based (hows your eyesight) or attention span. Vision problems can be corrected with glasses of course, while attention span is just a personal thing.
