trimming 223REM cases

so.... what im understanding from all this is i should trim to 1.750" but using cases as short as 1.740" is okay too (and trim those when they go >1.750)

Yes. Saami spec on the case is 1.730-1.760 , so you are safe but as per any reloading manual trim to length is 1.750 which it's a good practice to try and keep all your cases the same.

I was just looking at the specifications, and I read them differently. The specification from SAAMI is 1.760 - 0.030 which means that the case length range is 1.730-1.760

h ttp://www.saami.org/pubresources/cc_drawings/Rifle/223%20Remington.pdf

The manufacturing tolerances for the case length are 1.760 - .020 (1.760 to 1.740) and the length to the chamber mouth is 1.7720. Meaning the case manufactures have .020 to play with when making cases that will fit in a chamber that is 1.7720 in length to the mouth of the chamber.

And the reloading manuals state max case length 1.760 and they may be trimmed to 1.750.

my WFT just arrived from brownells. woot

anyway, i have a bunch of cases that have been resized with rcbs small base die and most of them are 1.760-1.769" so i know those will need to be trimmed to 1.750" but i also have a handful of cases that are below the saami minimum of 1.750" (they are around 1.743-1.748") and was wondering if i can still reload those and discharge them safely?

Don't worry about the short cases, a few thousands shorter in length will not effect bullet grip/neck tension. The only thing that can happen is like firing .38 Specials in a .357 chamber and having a carbon ring form that is shorter than the maximum length of your cases. Meaning keeping the chamber neck and bore clean with a bore brush will remove the carbon buildup in the chamber neck.

Trust me, I have the WFT also and three five gallon buckets of .223/5.56 cases and many of them are a little short and my AR15 rifles never complain about a few short cases.
